Watching GAA Abroad?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Moving to North Dakota for work later this month and there appears to be no bars never mind Irish bars in ND. Can you watch this summers GAA on-line as im willing to pay? Or do i need to subscribe to a certain channel in the states?

Yeah i used them when i was in Mississippi a few years back - Did the job.

Just one thing i got caught out in, every match was $20. I was watching the AI football semi-finals and thought that the $20 would pay for both the Minor and Senior - not so...

There's a couple of sites out there that will provide you with a different IP address for a fee, get an Irish one and you'd be able to watch tv live through the RTÉ or TV3 websites.

Alternatively, the longer way round, if you've somebody at home that has a computer they won't be using when the matches are on then it'd be possible to set up a remote access connection so that you could control their computer from your own allowing you to bypass the need for an IP address.

There's never really any other decent streams available for GAA matches so paying to watch them on ustream would probably be the easiest of the lot.

If all else fails you could get Highland Radio online for completely unbiased commentary of the Donegal Tyrone game from Charlie Collins and Martin McHugh.

Doubletree: DON'T GO!!!! I just moved out of ND after living there for 4 years! Thre is nothing in ND; do you know where you're going to be based (I'm guessing you're heading for the oil patch?) Have you a job lined up and if you don't mind me asking, if yes, with who?

Get ready for winters that last for 8 months and hit -50 (without wind chill!), no spring, no autumn, and summers that hit 35-40 deg. Worst food you'll ever eat, no fresh produce, and bud and coors the only beer in about 98% of the state.

Sorry for being so miserable, but trust me, you need the warning.

Socially there's little to do. Hunting and fishing are the main (and only) past-times. Get ready for God and gun country! I'd be happy to give you some more info if you need it. I was based in Bismarck but my work took me all over the State (mostly the oil patch) and I know it pretty well.

My advice: make contacts, and get a job anywhere else as fast as you can.

Festinog thanks for the feedback. I'll be based in Fargo, ND doing consulting for a local Healthcare System. I know it not an amazing place, but i'll be there for 6 months only, i gusess i could drive to Minneapolis for the big games which is about 4 hour drive.

Tykestv.eu tends to be quite a good site for championship games.

Lucky you Doubletree! Fargo is definitely doable (by far the most "cosmopolitan" city in ND), and if you're heading out for the next 6 months then you'll be there for the best weather. They think they've had the last of the snow, which means flooding where you'll be heading, but it won't be as bad as other years. Fargo's not a bad spot, and you're dead right; the twin's are only three hours away from you and it's a good spot. Pity you'll miss football season, but try and catch a Twins game.

There's no Irish community in ND (only place in the US that I never met another Mick!) but the Twins has one, and of course in Fargo you're only about a 9hr drive to Chicago; definitely worth a visit. Apart from being a fantastic city, there is, as everyone knows a HUGE Irish community and that's your best bet for the games. So my advice; when Dublin reach the final in September make a weekend of it to Chicago, find a good Irish bar (or GAA clubhouse) and watch the game in style!

@Snuf: Almost right with one small correction: wherever you find a Dubliner, a Tribesman will have been there first.

Speaking of which, how's the mott? ;)

Try www.myp2p.mu

It is a great site. Most of the hurling and football league matches on Setanta earlier this year were also streamed on it.

festy,

The 'mot' is fine thanks!.....(sometimes I love to use working class Dublineese words like that)!

As you ask of her, I can state that unlike others she doesnt mind all this Croke Park II business as she always said that teachers were overpaid for the job they do and like myself she hates trade unions and is not a member of any of them!

Snuff,
That's an interesting aside and I am delighted that the looming prospect of penury brings comfort to at least one person in Ireland.

Every grey cloud, etc. etc.
