In recent years there has been an out break of a disgusting act: Players wearing white socks! This has come across me as very stupid, cocky and pathetic. Why on earth would someone where white socks over there normal match socks? In most cases it is always the county players that do it. Do they think they are better than everyone else? I think there should be a ban put on it. There has been a ban on them imposed by FIFA so why don't the GAA follow? Give me your opinions and views on this topic.

Don't see an issue here. I have no problem with our lads wearing white socks over their socks :)

I would be happy to subtract a point for each white sock that appears on the field.
The funny thing is the old gaa socks had a white foot section, why dont they just wear them?

What difference does it make what colour socks players wear. We have a serious problem in this country with people being different and a hint of jealously against them. Time for some of the posters on this to move with the times and concentrate on serious issues within the organisation.

'White Socks'........for one Galway man, 129 years of history boils down to this one issue!!!

For all he cares, they can reinstate rule 21, 42, and whatever else. Crossmaglen Rangers can have their grounds taken over again and be left with only a portocabin to play inside......but......let no man ever be allowed wear 'white socks'!!!!.......In fact he suggests the offending socks should be 'BANNED' in the same manner of a member of the british security forces!!

High status indeed for 'white socks'!!!!

ballaghmen, I for one am not jealous of anyone wearing white socks over their football socks...
Can you tell me what purpose they serve? Surely it isnt beyond the intelligence of an intercounty footballer to get a pair of boots that fit them?

Also, can anyone explain the correlation between the guys who wear white socks in a club being the same guys who will look like great players against poor opposition but when push comes to shove will disappear out of harder and ultimately more important games? Maybe they wear them to show us that they are still on the field? Like reflective armbands?

I can't speak for anybody else but the only reason i wear them is the normal socks provide more grip on the inside of my boots than normal o'neills socks, also it provides more cushioning on the foot and is more comfortable than wearing two pairs of football socks.

Perhaps the reason white socks are worn is because players dont want to stand out from the normal gaa socks with the white trim.

Personally I find that wearing the socks gives me a slight advantage and if it annoys the man im marking all the better.

Is this why everyone hates Kildare?

The Master, your defense is a stereotype. Your argument is people who wear white socks are flashy and are not able for the more physical aspect of the harder hitting games. Take Ciaran Mc donald, he wore white socks and he was more than able to stand up for himself. Jealously is what your argument is all about, if a player wants to wear pink socks or any colour let him. Players should not be rated on there sense of style but rather their ability. You should be embarrassed that you defend this issue and it shows how narrow minded some people really are.

it allows players to stand out more to those in the stands. I find that it's those who cant allow their playing ability to make them stand out. I've never got round to the idea of taping your wrists either.

This is one of the most ridiculous threads I have ever come across on this. What difference does it make? You must be fairly bored at games if you are looking at the players socks.

Ballaghman I ask again, what exactly am I jealous of? Can I not get my hands on white socks or something?
Ballaghman I ask again, what purpose do they serve?
And finally, the only thing I am embarrassed about is that a mayo man is defending this garbage.

You are jealous of people who wear them because they have the confidence to wear them and are not bother what people like you think. Not that you should need confidence to wear them this day and age but it appears they are a few backward people like your self still remaining.
As Bosco1937 has stated "the only reason i wear them is the normal socks provide more grip on the inside of my boots than normal o'neills socks, also it provides more cushioning on the foot and is more comfortable than wearing two pairs of football socks"
People wear normal socks for better grip and cushion and white just so happens to look better with other colours than black or navy socks.
I can see from your attitude that you must be from West Mayo somewhere and have not moved with the times, the Celtic Tiger should be hitting your parts soon, but dont waste all the money as there is a recession coming up in another few years.

it depends on the players to be honest but this kind of thing shouldnt be banned as it doesnt matter.

we had a player a few year ago, against armagh, who appeared more interested in his appearance than the football match. Jim shook that out of him and this player has now staked his claim as one of donegals best ever players.

I personally prefer the old approach where a player in correctly kitted out in county/club colour and none of this look at me nonsense.

The guys make a good point re comfort and grip

I would also like to see white socks gotten rid of.
Also, what would people's opinion be for all county players to start wearing Puma King football boots?
A great boot, I have worn them all throughout my career, the ladies also like them ;)???

Whatever about white socks being worn over the football socks, I absolutely despise the wearing of the white (tennis-like) socks on their own without any football socks during a match. You wouldnt see it at intercounty level, but theres a fair bit of it going on at Club level. Well, there is in Offaly anyway. Do any other counties have this ridiculous phenomenon?
