Can't help much.I was a kid at the time.Meath beat my own county in the semi-final by two points.Sean Og O'Ceallachain(R.I.P) was the referee. He disallowed a Roscommon goal which was scored from a sideline kick.We forgave him..........after many years!
Paddy O'Brien was the legendary fullback for Meath.Mick Higgins for Cavan was also legendary.I think Paddy had to have an injection for a boil on his neck(painful) that day.
The Maguire brothers were on opposite sides.I think there was a paper strike at the time,so reporting was limited.
Was there a controversy about Cavans equalising point(Edwin Carolan) in the drawn game.?

Meath and Cavan had some great battles in the 1940s and 1950s. Meath won their first ever all-ireland in 1949 beating Cavan. Cavan got revenge beating them 3 years later. The 1949 final was the first ever final in football that two neighbouring counties have ever met.

Was it not 1952 that the Maguires featured on both teams, this from the Meath GAA site

All-Ireland Final 1952

Cavan gained revenge for their 1949 defeat when they beat Meath by 0-9 to 0-5 in a replayed final of the 1952 Championship.

Meath: K. Smyth, M. O'Brien, P. O'Brien, K. McConnell, T. O'Brien, C. Kelly, C. Hand, B. Maguire, D. Taaffe, D. Brennan, B. Smyth, P. Meegan, M. McDonnell, J. Reilly, P. McDermott.

This is the bit on the 49 Final & does not include Des Maguire. There was also a Brendan Maguire. Does Cromwell's book not have a good bit on all these games ?

All-Ireland Final 1949

One of the great days in Meath GAA history - arguably the greatest - came in September 1949 when the men in green and gold brought the Sam Maguire Cup to the county for the first time. They led Cavan by 0-7 to 0-3 at half-time and ran out winners by 1-10 to 1-6.

Meath: K. Smyth, M. O'Brien, P. O'Brien, K. McConnell, S. Heeny, P. Dixon, C. Hand, P. Connell, J. Kearney, F. Byrne, B. Smyth, M. McDonnell, P. Meegan, B. Halpenny, P. McDermott.
Subs: P. Carolan for Byrne

You learn something new every day Jinxs. It does not happen very often. Meath and Cavan finals (1949 and 1952) Galway and Offaly 1971, Armagh and Tyrone 2003, Kerry and Cork (2007 and 2009). 6 Finals altogether and half of them was when the back door came in.

If you know someone who is in college, many students have free access to archive newpaper articles. I know I got some very old club reports when I was in DCU. Maybe try your local library aswell.

The library in Navan should have archives of Meath Chronicle issues.

Oifigeach,

I am not sure if this would help but there is a barman who is GAA mad in An Bradan Feasa in the Ráth Chairn Gaeltacht. There are pictures on the walls of that team and I am sure the barman has a few stories from that game. I cannot gaurantee it but i'd be pretty sure about it.

My dad played in the replay. He's 84 now and I'd reckon he'd be more than happy to talk about it.
If you send on your contact details I'm sure I could put you in touch with him.

Tomsmith

I can tell you that according to the old people some great battles took place between Co Meath and Co Cavan.
Indeed it was often talked about after the 1952 All Ireland that the shopkeepers waved the Cavan Buses on and would not let the Cavan people buy minerals in Navan or Kells on the way home.
