Is Kerry hurling doomed?

read both local kerry papers, and from what i have seen , it seems thta the county board lack motivation, interest, improving hurling

Kerry, Antrim, Laois, Westmeath, Carlow, Down, Derry hurling are struggling along with no real or substantial help from Croke Park; the insular arrogant hurling elite couldn't give a stuff for the game as a whole and only tolerate Dublin because of the financial benefits.

HORSEDUNG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 The county board can be slated for never supporting the hurlers but in the last 2 years the County Board have really stepped up and the hurlers wanted for nothing...theplayers are in Kerry we showed that last year...the players just didnt put it in this year

HORSEDUNG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 The county board can be slated for never supporting the hurlers but in the last 2 years the County Board have really stepped up and the hurlers wanted for nothing...theplayers are in Kerry we showed that last year...the players just didnt put it in this year

People were hurling on the beaches of north Kerry long before the landed gentry began organising games in what are now hurling strongholds. Hurling is still the number one sport in this part of Kerry and I have no doubt that will continue long into the future. There is no danger of the game dying out in Kerry.

While the intense rivalry between the parishes of north Kerry has helped the game to thrive in this specific area, I feel it has undermined the endeavors of the county team. Unlike football in Kerry, it has been difficult for these clubs to pull together under the one flag.

Its not that long ago that Kerry were well able for teams like Offaly or Antrim and put in some notable performances against Kilkenny and Limerick. However, hurling in Tralee and Killarney is now at an all time low and the days of the footballer lining out for the county hurlers are, unfortunately, no more.

Recent results suggest the county team has taken a backward step. I'm not sure this is the case. I feel Meyler's comments about the player's hunger this year reveal more about the Christy Ring competition and restructuring of the league than the player's commitment.

The solution? I'm not sure. The county board has bent over backwards to accommodate the hurlers recently. I think the game needs to develop in the larger urban clubs and schools before we can hope to compete at the levels that were once the norm.

Kerry narrowly lost to Kilkenny in the league in the mid-nineties. Around the same time they beat the All-Ireland champions Clare in the league and knocked Waterford out of the Munster Championship.

I thought there was decent support for hurling in recent year. I'd like to know what happened the motion for Christy Ring winner to join the qualifiers? Never heard a word about it since it was first mentioned.

The biggest mistake was not going up {county boards fault}. What drive could the team have after working there balls off last year to win the ring cup only to be stuck in the same place as last year. Fair enough they might of taking a hammering up in the big time in one or two of the games but that is where they will improve.

Kerry are only playing at minor level against the rest of the 5 counties in Munster.
In order to improve long term they need to play these teams from under 14 up.
They will take beating but with dedicated work standards will improve

From what i got from the situation it was on Mylers advice that they decided not to go up to senior champ...i think they should have maybe a hiding in the Munster but if they drew Laois,Carlow,westmeath in the qualifers 1 or 2 wins could be possible,plus the oppurtunity to have teams like Galway,Cork,Kilkenny play in Tralee would only raise the profile of hurling...An application should of went in to join the Leinster championship

A few years back Kerry tryed to enter the Munster Intermediate Championship but it was turned down for some reason. If they did play the Cork Tipp etc Intermediate sides it would be a good teast for them, after all the Kerry county champions play in the Munster Intermediate Club Championship so the county team should be the same really

The restructuring of the league this year did not help Kerry's cause. Having maintained their division two status last year and secured games, as we thought, against Offaly, Clare, Antrim and Laois it promised to be a challenging year ahead. It was thought that these games, along with another year in the CR, would have been a nice stepping stone towards a possible return to the championship.

However, Kerry were effectively relegated to the third division under the new system. So after a very successful year in 2011 Kerry started 2012 in a poorer place overall. How can you motivate a team to step up to the next level when the goalposts are moved to suit those they are trying to catch?

Spot on with point points.
In general a lot of people just measure success or progress by a single match in any given year, its never about a single teams performance its the overal health of the sport in a given county from underage right up.

Nail on the head therealtmo. After winning the Christy Ring cup last year there was no further? The motivation obviously wasnt there to do it all again. What Meyler wanted was for them to kick on and really show their superiority at that level this year but it wasnt to be.

This might be controversial but I think what Kerry need to do is try get into Leinster
