Names on Jersey's

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I see this has popped up again. I would just like to know what the views of the good people of hoganstand are on gaa players having their names on the back of their jerseys.
For me it's a no no. I regularly warm the bench, And it means an awful lot to me to get a jersey in the 1st 15.

Agree totally. Would be a disaster....people seem to forget we are an amateur association

I wouldnt mind too much once players dont pick their numbers and they wear the numbers for their position in the game , So for example if one week Bernard Brogan was playing full forward he would wear "B.Brogan 14" , And if he played the next week in the corner he would wear "B.Brogan 15" if that makes sense .. None of this nonsense of picking their favourite number like "Flynn 37" or something......

Think it would be a good idea but I agree with wayne their position should determine their number

Over here we have been putting names on our kids GAA jerseys for years. My son puts his christian name only on all his GAA and soccer shirts as does my daughter. Its lighthearted and a bit of fun and definately a talking point when we meet other Irish people on holiday abroad.

It just wouldn't be feasible in GAA. Unlike soccer, the number on your GAA shirt has a direct link to your position on the field. Number 14 is Full-Forward and that's that, whereas in soccer number 14 could be anywhere. You would have to keep changing the jerseys every week, where is the money going to come from for a freshly printed new set of jerseys every week? The only county who could cope is Dublin.

Tell that to Donegal!

to be honest i wouldn't be in favour of having the names on jerseys in football but i think it would be a good idea in hurling

When I first heard this, I rather cynically thought of a time I was in Semple Stadium in the terrace, and a crowd of fair-weather Dubs arrived (not tarring ye all, I know the vast majority of GAA Dubs are not like this) roaring and shouting the likes of "go on number 13, ah for feck sake number 4 you're useless! etc." It brought to me the idea that it would make it more accessible with regard to familiarity of the players, which wouldn't go well with me whatever way it's been ingrained in my head. I like to appreciate the simplicity of simply having the number on your back, and getting to know the players by going to game after game after game, so you can automatically tell by the way they make half a stride from 70 yards away exactly who it is on the field at that moment in time. Names on the jerseys I feel would take away this magic bond that you simply can't get anywhere in another sport, in my opinion anyway, I don't like to be coming across as overly negative on this issue, it's just my gut feeling on the topic.

In todays game where positions mean little I don't think the numbers are important, furthermore, it would generate more finance if a kid wanted to buy a certain players jersey where the number would then become significant. Either way, I don't see it as an important issue as we GAA folk know our players, but financially, it could pay off!

Think it should be put before council as an option for the Hurlers. With the recent helmet regs it would allow the public to recognise the players. Normally the only time we get to see what these superstars look like is in interview after the game. The names might make them more readily identifiable. I think the Hurlers get a raw deal.

How would it help the public recognise the players? on the pitch, they still have a helmet on, you can't see their faces. They already have the numbers on the jerseys, so once you know who's wearing what number you're sorted. in any case, having watched the last 2 camogie finals on the tv the names on their jerseys are awful hard to read, unless its really close up. Off the pitch, they're not really going to be wearing their jerseys around the place with their names on the back anyway.

The only way this would work would be if squad numbers are delegated at the start of every season .

Wayne, you're right. In saying that, the only way it would work is for numbers to be designated to players so you would end up with the full-foward wearing 10, the centre back 15 etc etc.. and in Hurling and Football, like rugby, the number is relivant to the position.

So for me it would be a no.
