Greatest manager of all time

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Who is the greatest GAA manager and why? Please try not to be biased, be honest. In no significant order: Sean Boylan, Mickey Harte, Mick O'Dwyer, Pete Mc Grath, Brian Cody, Kevin Heffernan. Who else lads?

I am not saying that Mickey Harte is the best manager of all time, but to answer your question booboo here are what Tyrone has won while he has been in charge.

SENIORS:

3 All Ireland Titles
4 Ulster Titles
1 National League
4 Dr McKenna Cups

UNDER 21'S:

2 All Ireland Titles
3 Ulster Titles

MINORS:

1 All Ireland Title
3 Ulster Titles

So since he started with Tyrone minors in 1991 to this present day he has won 6 All Ireland Titles and 10 Ulster Titles.

I would say its very disputable!

Depends on what you class as success. If its All Irelands/longevity/success with various counties, it has to be Micko. Boylan, Harte, Herffernan etc up there....I wouldn't be able to comment on too far back.
Someone like O'Mahony deserves an honourable mention (even though he certainly is not the best ever, or close) for his work with Galway, and Leitrim - easy to forget what a monumental achievment that was.
In hurling.....Cody is the runaway leader. Nobody can touch him. Several other excellent managers, but he has won consistently, while keeping big stars happy, and changing the team on a consistent basis. My heart would nominate Cyril Farrell, who plucked us from the shadows after 57 years to win 3 All Irelands.

Brian Cody by a street. Think he will be happy at 5..... If anyone has the info I would love to see how many players has he used in the last 4 All Ireland Finals. Certain elements are constant but must be close to 30 different individuals who have played in those 4 finals.

23 different players have played in the four finals, including subs like Fennelly, Richie Hogan, Rice and TJ so that's 19 core players and most of the 2006 team are still there. A truly remarkable achievement. I would say only the Kerry and Dublin footballers of the 70s retained the same basic line up over so many finals.

What about Dr. Eamonn Fitzgerald, who was the Kerry 'manager' for a ridiculous amount of years before there was such a thing strictly speaking. He won a pile of AIs with Kerry.

Modern era, you would have to say that Harte is right up there with the best of them, even though I don't beleive he is half as 'nice' as he comes across, but that's another day's work ;-)
