Obviously the people who always wore helmets have got on grand but how many people had to make the adjustment this year? MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13818 - 26/05/2010 20:40:59 659463 Link 0 |
They are roasting to wear and they do affect the peripheral vision but I've found out what the guard is for in a few matches. Very glad of it. Some people seem to get a problem with the wee buttons ,that hold the face guard on, breaking. Suas Sios (None) - Posts: 1558 - 26/05/2010 21:12:16 659496 Link 0 |

Most of the players are still wearing illegal ones, apparentely you can still wear them but you arent covered by insurance if you get any injury while wearing one. kilruane (Tipperary) - Posts: 155 - 08/06/2010 13:41:27 670779 Link 0 |
Whats the point of wearing them at all if your not covered. These players should not be allowed to play with altered helmets. gipo (Sligo) - Posts: 39 - 08/06/2010 14:05:13 670826 Link 0 |
I think the point is that you dont get your head split open but the real problem is if you do your cruciate, your insurance doesnt cover you for operations etc kilruane (Tipperary) - Posts: 155 - 08/06/2010 14:18:04 670839 Link 0 |
They are god's curse! Wore one first time a few months ago and was almost blind for the whole of the first half with sweat running into my eyes. I just can't get used to it and not being able to see or hear what is going on!! Was debating whether to continue playing after this year but that has made up my mind and unless we are compeltely stuck I will be warming the sideline for the rest of the year. hurlingdub (Dublin) - Posts: 6978 - 08/06/2010 14:35:36 670874 Link 0 |
PS. Someone mentioned being glad of the face guard. I noticed, and this is purely subjective, that some players are more reckless since the helmet became compulsory. As though you don't really have to worry anymore about making contact with someone's noggin! Or your own for that matter. hurlingdub (Dublin) - Posts: 6978 - 08/06/2010 14:38:04 670880 Link 0 |
Hurlingdub you must have it on backwards or else someone is taking the **** and sold you a motorbike helmet. bosch (Derry) - Posts: 873 - 08/06/2010 14:40:51 670886 Link 0 |

Used the vaseline the first day and it did stop the sweat. Hearing not the best anyway but find it doesn't help. It just feels very constrictive and at a 'certain age' it is harder to get used to things. I find that there's lots of lads been playing for years who see it as factor in their deciding to stop. hurlingdub (Dublin) - Posts: 6978 - 08/06/2010 15:26:35 670965 Link 0 |
I am convinced hurling is now more dangerous with this mandatory rule. I'm fine with anyone who wants to wear one but adults should have choice. You are much more fearless with a helmet on and wild swings to the head are much more likely when players have a helmet. There is also much more likelihood of a neck injury with all the interference with helmets that goes on. onlyhurling (Galway) - Posts: 800 - 08/06/2010 16:59:59 671145 Link 0 |
Does anyone apart from my good self think it would be a good idea to make each team wear the same helmet with their county colours and crest on it? It looks good in American Football and surely it would only add to the appeal of hurling... sashman (Kildare) - Posts: 465 - 21/06/2010 19:50:48 683334 Link 0 |
How would you identify the various players? Commentating would be a nightmare as would watching. It's hard enough to identify players when 2 players wear the same colour helmets. Pinkie (Wexford) - Posts: 4100 - 21/06/2010 20:07:41 683350 Link 0 |
Mycro extralite.....best helmet ever......i just have a terrible problem with sweating....local rivalries are stressful stuff! gaamad1996 (Wexford) - Posts: 439 - 22/06/2010 11:20:42 683633 Link 0 |
Saw a picture of PJ Ryan on yesterday's examiner: the gaps in the faceguard looked huge. Are those helmets within the standards, and are refs supposed to check that the helmets are legal? football first (None) - Posts: 1259 - 22/06/2010 12:03:30 683686 Link 0 |
No referees are not to check helmets specifications just that they're on the players head....any other details are to do with the bosses! The limerick goalie had a lovely little hat over his helmet somehow without the round bowl of the hat he just had the peak of the hat ...thought this was quite interesting ha gaamad1996 (Wexford) - Posts: 439 - 22/06/2010 13:40:54 683827 Link 0 |
