Problems with hurling helmets?

(Oldest Posts First)

Obviously the people who always wore helmets have got on grand but how many people had to make the adjustment this year?

I hadn't really worn one for awhile and the adjustment's been okay. A few missed clearences due to not being used to the restricted vision (well that's my line anyway!) and I find the peripharal vision isn't as good. Happy enough though overall.

As well as that the heat nearly killed me on Saturday!! I actually thought that my head was going to melt!

They are roasting to wear and they do affect the peripheral vision but I've found out what the guard is for in a few matches. Very glad of it. Some people seem to get a problem with the wee buttons ,that hold the face guard on, breaking.

Most of the players are still wearing illegal ones, apparentely you can still wear them but you arent covered by insurance if you get any injury while wearing one.

I have a Mycro Xtra Lite, i love it, great peripheral vision and doesnt feel like any kind of weight on my head

Whats the point of wearing them at all if your not covered. These players should not be allowed to play with altered helmets.

I think the point is that you dont get your head split open but the real problem is if you do your cruciate, your insurance doesnt cover you for operations etc

They are god's curse! Wore one first time a few months ago and was almost blind for the whole of the first half with sweat running into my eyes. I just can't get used to it and not being able to see or hear what is going on!! Was debating whether to continue playing after this year but that has made up my mind and unless we are compeltely stuck I will be warming the sideline for the rest of the year.

PS. Someone mentioned being glad of the face guard. I noticed, and this is purely subjective, that some players are more reckless since the helmet became compulsory. As though you don't really have to worry anymore about making contact with someone's noggin! Or your own for that matter.

Vaseline is your best friend here. Just draw a line of vaseline across your eyebrows and down the side of your face to wick the sweat away from your eyes. As for hearing??? never found a problem with this, there are quite large holes in the side for your ears.

Used the vaseline the first day and it did stop the sweat. Hearing not the best anyway but find it doesn't help. It just feels very constrictive and at a 'certain age' it is harder to get used to things. I find that there's lots of lads been playing for years who see it as factor in their deciding to stop.

I am convinced hurling is now more dangerous with this mandatory rule. I'm fine with anyone who wants to wear one but adults should have choice. You are much more fearless with a helmet on and wild swings to the head are much more likely when players have a helmet. There is also much more likelihood of a neck injury with all the interference with helmets that goes on.

Does anyone apart from my good self think it would be a good idea to make each team wear the same helmet with their county colours and crest on it? It looks good in American Football and surely it would only add to the appeal of hurling...

How would you identify the various players? Commentating would be a nightmare as would watching. It's hard enough to identify players when 2 players wear the same colour helmets.

Saw a picture of PJ Ryan on yesterday's examiner: the gaps in the faceguard looked huge. Are those helmets within the standards, and are refs supposed to check that the helmets are legal?

No referees are not to check helmets specifications just that they're on the players head....any other details are to do with the bosses! The limerick goalie had a lovely little hat over his helmet somehow without the round bowl of the hat he just had the peak of the hat ...thought this was quite interesting ha

How would it be difficult to identify players if they had there number on their helmet as well as their jersey?
