Fashion Trends with Young Players

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I was at a juvenile game recently . I was shocked at the number of 'posers' as they are called that were playing . It seems to me that these days players are more worried about how they look and not how they play . White socks over their club socks, jersey sleeves taped up,white tape around their wrists etc. I also saw some of them fold over the top of their shorts to make them smaller...what is the benefit of this? Also alot of players wear under shorts now? is there any advantage to wearing them or is it to look good like most other things? Back in my day you were lucky to be wearing togs and socks and didnt care how you looked... Whats happenned since then?

The folding over off the shorts is because the waist band on the o neills is annoying on them.

It just seems to be the society we now live in pass_it. I remember when I was still playing it was the beginning of the coloured boots and even then I thought the guys who wore them were bit poncy - in fact I was discussing this with a fellow former player recently (who was near the end of his playing days when I was in my early 20's) and he said he loved to walk out and see the guy he was marking wearing the fancy boots as a) he knew the ilk of him and b) it gave him more of a reason to empty him as soon as he got the chance, which, for this guy was always within the first few minutes of the game :-). Now its worse again with all the things you've already mentioned and added to that the body suits which I've seen a few players wearing and the guys who come out on to the field looking like they've just walked out of the hairdressers. I suppose what can we expect though when we see the way the McDonalds, Mortimers and Mulligans of this world take/took to the field - they've a lot to answer for!!

the undershorts stops the wind going up your ass... the tape is mainly show. ironically the taoing up the sleeves is to show the guns, but most of them are too lazy to work on the muscles...

Insulating tape sales are plumetting in the last 8 years, this goes to show you that its a fairly modern thing .

pass_it i couldnt agree more. Also players using hair gel before games.... just pure nonsense beacuase then it pours down and they look like bigger fools den dey already are... i also think f50s are the biggest disaster to happen to gaelic football .... no gaelic player should be able to wear bright yellow boots or as adidas phrases it 'lemon peel'
Poncy or wat?

Yes i did watch the game but i was just amazed by the amount of players showing off . However there was an awful amount of young fillies around so i could see why! Yes black spot your right them boots are terrible . Anyone intersted in football would not buy them . All they were made for was them diving hours in that foreign sport . I think soccer has alot to do with white socks and tape too? What do ye think?

Pat i was just questioning why players wore them? They werent around in my time as a player so i dont know what they're benefits are . Is there any scientific advantage over underwear?

Now Paul Galvin, according to a recent interview, is into his fashion; there is not many guys who'll empty him on the field!

Half our senior team and minor team tape their sleeves and yes it is to show off their muscles. They don't know how ridiculous they look.
On the topic of bicycle shorts, I had a problem with my hamstrings and they seemed to help a bit, maybe it was only in my head but they are quite comfortable and I continue to wear them now.
On the subject of coloured boots, only once in my life have I owned a pair.
My boots busted at training on Thursday and being short of cash that particular week I went to Lifestyle sports a couple of hours before the match on the Saturday and bought the cheapest pair in my size.
They were a hideous silver, red and white pair of Nikes.
I only kept them for about 2 weeks and then gave them away to another lad.
They turned out to be a great pair though as he had them for almost 18 months.
The tank tops or body suits or whatever they are called, I would imagine are quite good. Most of them are thermal, so you wouldn't be freezing going out to warm up on a cold day, and they would keep you relatively cool on a scorcher, so i would have no issue with these whatsoever.
