'A Prayer for All Footballers'

(Oldest Posts First)

Wonder where this prayer can be found? I tried googling it but cant seem to find it. It was said at the late Phily McGuiness funeral and i haven't been able to get it out of my head.
i know the last line says.."May the great referee who calls my name; Say you played like a man, you played the game."

Heres a version I heard about hurling. It was read at the 125 celebrations in Thurles in November!!!!

Grant me O Lord, a hurler's skill,

With strength of arm and speed of limb

Unerring eye for the flying ball

And courage to match whate'er befall

May my stroke be steady and my aim be true

My actions manly and my misses few

No matter what way the game may go

May I rest in friendship with every foe

When the final whistle for me has blown

And I stand at last before God's judgement throne

May the great referee when he calls my name

Say, you hurled like a man; you played the game.

Google "Gaelic Footballers Prayer" and there is a link to a bebo page with what looks like what you are looking for. I'd have copied and pasted it but I've no access to bebo in work.

~Gaelic Footballers Prayer~

Give me o Lord a Footballers skill
With strength of arm and speed of limb
Unerring eye for the flying ball
And courage to match them whatever befall
May my aim be steady - my Kick be true
My actions brave - my misses few
And no matter what way the game may go
May I part in friendship with every foe
When the final whistle for me is blown
And I stand at last at Gods Judgement Throne
May the great Referee says when he calls my name...
"You played like a man-You played the game"
Amen

I like it. Hope that's the right one Rossielassie. I just did what Breff said there and got it off some lad's bebo.

The football one is definitely better than the hurling one :o)

I prefer the hurling one. It is more uniquely Irish and the lyrics are that of a more skillful scribe in my humble opinion.

Breffni

do you not think that "you played like a man - you played the game" sounds too repeditive. Surely "You hurled like a man - you played the game" is more lyrical

:-)

The hurling one would stick in your mind longer as it's more epic if you will. Both very well written though.

Well I could hardly say one was better written than the other if they're both almost the exact same words could I?

And yet another thread (started with good intentions) decsends in to another Gaelic Football V Hurling farce...

I seriously hope some of the posts here were parodies of what goes on on the GAA forum.

There should be none of this football v. hurling stuff really. They are both under the unique Organisation that is our beloved GAA and there's enough people out there against us without us being against each other.
