Are Meath living on past glory

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Are Meath the most glorified side? Limerick were very unlucky last year in Quarter Final and Kerry were in 3rd gear and walked the Semi. Apparently John Evans was missing big players yesterday and beat them. Well done Tipp

No. Meath rarely peform well in the league and come championship time I feel they will make the last 8 and possibly 4. 2010 is also their best chance to win Leinster. I'm not biased in any way of course!!!!!!!!!! ;-}

In fairness castlemaine Limerick could and should have beaten Kerry in the last couple of years and should have beaten Cork in last years Munster final, Sligo were unlucky against Kerry last year too, thats not to hide the fact that Meath dont't have problems and a lot of work to do but to call us the most glorified side is somewhat , there is potential there but getting together and finding some degree of consistency and sutible gameplan is proving problamatic

I dont think anybody, in Meath or elsewhere, would claim that their team today is anywhere near as good as 10- 15 years ago. However they have made the last 4 twice in the last 3 years. This year will be important to see just how good they are.

we really are in big trouble, never i feel has the future been so bleak for us, we have not even contested a leinster final for allmost 10 years now , and leinster football is very poor in all fairness. our under 21s were well beat by westmeath just over a week ago, we have just lost to tipp in the league a team that kildare trounced just a couple of weeks ago, we are probably 3rd best in leinster at best way behind kildare and dublin, i wont use the excuse that we are rebuilding because we have beeen stuck in a rut now since 2001 apart from 07 when we played some really good stuff in beating tyrone and galway, the return of shane o rourke will improve us come summer but we still have alot of ground to make up even to contest for a leinster title.

LOL, nice one. To add to that, Meath are one of those teams that I just hate to see us up against, you may not be at the top of your game but you are damned difficult to beat all the same.

We just don't seem to be treating the league with the respect it deserves and are suffering in the championship as a result. We are far from a finished article and have not won two consecutive games in the Leinster championship for maybe seven or eight years - a terrible, terrible record. O'Brien has us set up very defensively and scores are hard to come by as a result. The game against Westmeath was a perfect example where we were in total control for 50 minutes but couldn't get the scores to bury a team. I think our score difference in the league has been negative for five of the last six years.
Our championship performances in 2007 and last year were on merit and with a bit of momentum, beating the likes of Mayo, Galway or Tyrone is something we can do repeatedly. Our problem is that we are not consistent enough to beat teams ranked just below them - the likes of Laois, Wexford, Limerick, Fermanagh - nine times out of ten. And if you can't do that, you will not have the platform to move up a level.
Are we over rated - no, because even when we got to the semi-final last year it was not like people were raving about us, most had the sense to realise that we were fifth or sixth in the pecking order, no better.

No offense but last year was the first year in a long time meath were above laois in leinster. And that's because we've went back so much.
One thing i will say is that when meath smell blood they have the winning mentality to nick a win. Like against tyrone when they kicked wide after wide. And mayo when they got that goal from the line ball that shouldn have been theirs and pushed on for the win. It is good luck but they have the drive to never give up. Its probably something they've gained from living from past glory but there's not one thing wrong with that if it works!

I don't think any honest Meath supporter is living on past glories. We in Meath are used to long spells of unachieveing. I wish Meath would go back to the old style of play though. We were great exponents of the long game and getting the ball in quickly to the forwards but now we are at this short passing game. If you give the opposition defences time to reorganise and close off the space than the best teams in Ireland let alone Meath will struggle to score.

Meath Still have an average team just like most of the better Leinster teams bar Dublin.

When they played Down recently in Newry they were a typical Meath team, big, strong, physical, & tough.

They probably lack a bit more quality up front & maybe a bit of belief, but are a team no-one would want to be drawm against. They will give most teams a tough game.

Probably are in the second bracket of teams.

PRDY - Yes we got a couple of lucky decisions, they can't be changed so stop whining. Next thing you'll be harping back to '96 and trying to say that McHale should never have been sent off etc., the usual tripe I have to listen to. Get over it and move on.

waynoi - I for one have no complaints, what happens happens and can't be changed. While some Meath people may still be giving out, it is certainly not reflective of all Meath people. Anyway back to the question without being drawn into a slagging match with a child, no, I don't believe there are too many Meath people with dilusions of grandeur right now, you only have to look at the Meath board to see that there are not too many optimistic about the current set-up. We've gotten to 2 semi-finals since 2001, and has been pointed out, we've not won back-to-back games in Leinster in a long time. While I feel with some of the players we have we should maybe be doing better, we have no divine right to win Sam and though I'd love to see us win it, I fear it will be some time before I do again.

Sure every county will always have that kind of supporter Waynol - the ones who will bitch and moan about the extra minute not being played and the square ball not being called that cost them the game etc. etc etc.
