I should have added him to my overate list in the thread of the same name. In tandem with my views on Christy Moore, with Dylan, I just done get it.

Personally I consider him an absolute legend, can't understand how people can think otherwise.

Fair enough some may not like his music, but just look at what he's achieved throughout his career, and the influence he has had over the industry from the 60's onwards.

He changed the face of music, an absolute legend and will probably be one of the last long time greats the way the music industry has gone..

Quite simply the greatest song writer ever. You can soend a week discussing your favourite Dylan song, and still be undecided.

he plundered and stole along the way, adopted airs from Ireland (The Patriot game) and many other other places, used Joan Baez's voice to get established, but the man is a genius.

As for singing, he is a marvellous singer with an amazing range in his voice.

Now everyone can sing, but some people have better voices that others. Dylan does not have a good voice, but he is a great singer.

If you want to hear good voices, listen to opera.

Patrique, is it true that he saw Tommy Makem (i think) playing in an Irish bar in NY and took a lot of his songwriting inspiration from that?

He knew the Clancy's and the McPeakes from Belfast as they were big in the States as Dylan was coming through. He used to sing "The Newry Highwayman" which he got from either Liam or Tommy, and he stole the air of "The Patriot Game" for "With God on our Side" and Dominic Behan tried to sue him for years.

He still sings a number of Irish songs, "Eileen Aroon" and "Arthur McBride" to name a few.

Have a look at this link and see the number of "Irish" songs he does. And marvel at the number of songs he has written.

I saw him play a few times but never met the man. Closest I got was meeting Joan Baez in about 1975? as I knew Francie McPeake for a while and met her when I was with Francie.

But Dylan stands out from the rest because of the range of topics, depth and variation in his repertoire.
