Leave our sheeps head alone.

I was at a match in Ballinlough a few years ago and an auld buck was explaining how we became known as the sheepstealers. Apparently in the 19noughties there was a serious dearth of single women in the Ballinlough area and myth and lore had it that Ballyhaunis had oodles of beautiful single maiden. It was decided to mount a raid and bring back a heap of them. Ever since the raiding party got to Ballyhaunis and set eyes on these comely maidens we were known as the sheep stealers. All that travel, you couldn't come home empty handed.

514921 I would change the Crest for Derry, Not the GAA one, The one with the UGLY skeleton on a rock with a castle behind and the Flag of Ulster/England at the top. I hate seeing that it is as ugly!

You defo right there. That is a horrible crest. Scary almost. What is it meant to symbolise anyways?

Agree with th Derry one, thanksfully it's not on their GAA jersies. I don't know the origin of it, but looking at it, it looks like a British-influenced crest, cannot possibly see what local connections it has unless someone can clarify?

514868 I think Meath should change theirs to an Oak Leaf or an acorn or something!

Seems to bring success to other counties who have used it in the past.

515166 RLF, it wasn't discussed ay a county board meeting. The crest was changed at the county convention as a result of a motion from The O Raghallaighs being debated and passed.

Cheers greengrass but I was already aware.

To be fair to your footballers they re-grouped well after the Mayo thing and went on to win a game or two. Running Meath to 5-6 points in Navan was better than a lot would do, so hopefully a few of that good minor team will "Shine" next year so best of luck in 2010.

If I can remember primary school I think the castle is to do with the caslte in Greencastle Co.Donegal, About Norman de Burgos who owned something in Derry, and then one of them died after a big row then hundreds of years after they found the skeleton in the Greencastle castle,

We changed ours a few times in the last decade from the old traditional bore and book, to benbulben in black and white to the now coloured benbulben with book and shell.

I think changing crests every now and then isnt a bad thing. I mean look at the old crests and they'd look out of place on todays jerseys. God be with the days when it was a joy to pull the stiched crest off a rivals club jersey.

the Roscommon crest was just redesigned using the images on the old one. best way forward instead of coming up with fancy new crests with no meaning and looking like an 8 year old with crayons designed them - see Longford

and you're wrong on where the sheepstealers nickname came from: I think it came from around the time of the famine when people used to be sent to "Van Diemens Land" after being found guilty of commiting a crime and a high percentage of the convicts from Roscommon were done for Sheep Stealing so some smart ass gave Roscommon people the nickname.

Also Roscommon is the origin of the last known/recorded cattle raid (a practice several thousand years old) in Ireland during the civil war when a group of rustlers ventured from North Roscommon across Leitrim and into the new juristicion of NI to steal some animals. the animals were herded back to north Roscommon

Kildare changed theirs a few years back, not a big fan of it. The old one was much better.
