Sorry I dont have any news on this - but does anyone know why nobody seems to like this compromise hurling/shintygame - there were 5 man and a dog at Nowlan Pk the last time I saw it (on tv)....yet 80000 can turn up at Croker to see Aussie compromise rules thing - which is an awful looking spectacle in my opinion?

Surprised you say that, neither of the compromise rules games is as satisfying as the real thing but I always thought the football one was much the better spectacle of the two. Anyway shinty is not nearly as big in Scotland as AFL is in Australia. And you'll never get big crowds to watch teams made up mainly of Ring Rackard and Meagher Cup players. The football mightn't contain all the stars of the game but at least the average GAA supporter will have heard of most of the players.

the scotland womans team have a few players from Tir Connail harps. Is this a camogie team because their players have irish names. Isnt a bit odd that scotland are playing ireland and theres irish girls on the scottich team!!

one could draw parallels to ireland-england - stuutgart 88

Why do so little of the best players take part?

To give players with lesser counties to partcipate for Ireland like counties like kilkenny and tipp are playing All Irelands.

Used to think to myself: "Wonder what the Shinty boys think of Ireland field third rate players?" but then I noticed that the Scots field players from third rate clubs too!
These Shinty players are from clubs that are not near the top Highland level!!

A lot of people seem to think that the top hurlers would win easy against Scotlands top shinty players, I would disagree I think it would be a close game.

How about getting the all stars to play the top shinty players and actually telling people about the game.

The game last year in Kilkenny was a bit of a secret as there was nothing in the press or on websites about the game, the Ireland team last year included Sean Og, Eddie Brennen, Derek Lyng, Tommy Walsh to name but a few and the Scotland team was made up almost entirely of players from the second level and Scotland still won.

As a shinty player it frustrates the little enthusiasm the GAA show for the shinty/hurling international as i view it as a great spectacle and unique occasion.
The two sports are worlds apart in terms of popularity, crowds etc as shown by this years all ireland final having over 80,000 watching whereas our scottish cup final (which i played in) only had 5,500 watching but its a great chance for the two sports to come together.
And having watched the aussie rules/football game a couple of years which was ultimately just a fight i thought it was shocking that the GAA promote that game so much and nearly do nothing at all to promote the shinty match which is far more pleasing to the eye.

Also why is it the bulk of the irish squads are picked from lessor counties even when we keep winning?

Mon the Scotland

A lot of our top players are still involved with their clubs. And its to give players from lesser counties a chance to play at the top level.

Could someone please tell me why TG4 are only showing deferred coverage of the match on Saturday.

It's a pity we've the gutter press over here because if a fella with the medals that Tommy Walsh has wants to play in the shinty every year it tells you more about the character of the man that any 'journalist' trying to sell a story.

Question for Patrique here. As the hurling/shinty becomes more established, at what point will the Ulster-Scots movement come on board? Or perhaps they already have and I've missed it?

Managed to get BBC 2 Scotland. Good match. Great win for us.

It was funny the Scottish commentators mixing up all the names. They called Gareth Johnson Tommy Walsh.
