Here's a question for the experts out there, which does not seem to be clearly addressed by the GAA's official guidebook online. If a championship game finishes level, and extra time must be played, are yellow cards picked up during normal time carried over into the extra period ? I was under the impression that extra time was a new game, and I think it is definitely the case that a team who have a man sent off in normal time are restored to 15 players for extra time. However, I have just seen a match where a player got his first yellow card in normal time, and then received a second in extra time and was dismissed. There were protests to the referee, who seemed unsure but eventually upheld the dismissal. Was he right ? MourneRising (Down) - Posts: 238 - 09/10/2009 11:40:52 449445 Link 0 |
He was right, yellow cards carryover into extra time. Makes no sense to me, as your allowed to start the game with 15 in extra time as it's a different game. But have been told this twice in the last year by refs during the period before the start of extra time. JFK (Wexford) - Posts: 590 - 09/10/2009 12:42:25 449511 Link 0 |
Thanks JFK, I think you are probably right, although it is a crazy rule. If the player in last night's match had received a second yellow at any stage in normal time, even the last minute, he could have been replaced as soon as extra time began. As he got his second yellow in extra time, his team were left a man down for the climax of the game. MourneRising (Down) - Posts: 238 - 09/10/2009 13:48:05 449584 Link 0 |
As on official I agree he made the right call but I do agree that the rule is ridiculous. fredrickwood (Roscommon) - Posts: 2871 - 09/10/2009 16:47:23 449847 Link 0 |
That referee was definitely right. The exact same scenario occurred with Kildare & Roscommon in the qualifiers in 2003. Ros went a man down in normal time but went back to 15 in ET. Tadhg Fenin who received his first yellow in normal time then received a second yellow in ET and was sent off. The Kildare county board raised this at the following years congress but nothing ever came out of it. doublehop (Kildare) - Posts: 4172 - 09/10/2009 16:50:18 449852 Link 0 |
MourneRising : It happened to us very early in the year, and like an idiot I came on to the pitch, had a one to one with the referree with the Volume up. But I was made to believe by bigger idiots that it didn't carry over. Knowledge is power. JFK (Wexford) - Posts: 590 - 09/10/2009 19:18:02 450041 Link 0 |

It's called EXTRA TIME for a reason.........not NEW GAME TIME.........some people just don't have a clue.......read the rule book and you'll be better equiped when looking at a situation.......... Cranky, I'm not sure if you have read the previous posts, but it is difficult to find clarification on this issue in the online rules. Despite your claims, teams start extra time on a 15-a-side basis regardless of red cards in normal time. Are you seriously suggesting that this does not represent a new game, and that no confusion exists over yellow cards in normal time ? Say if a guy is sent of in Normal Time - by 2 yellow cards - in ET the team start with 15 again -- can the guy sent off (2 Yellows) start for the team in ET as it is a new game??..... westerner (Sligo) - Posts: 192 - 11/10/2009 12:51:39 451062 Link 0 |
The rule is very simple. If you have a player sent off in regulation time then he can be replaced at the beginning of ET.It doesnt matter if it was 2 yellows or a straight red.Yellow cards carry over to ET. fredrickwood (Roscommon) - Posts: 2871 - 12/10/2009 00:08:35 451494 Link 0 |

Just a little point on this, it's hypothetical, can you name a different 15 to start the extra-time, say for example make 8 changes for the start of extra time and still keep your five substitutions, still keep your 5 subs intact. Also with that do you need to fill out a new team sheet then in extra time. JFK (Wexford) - Posts: 590 - 12/10/2009 09:38:25 451575 Link 0 |
Yes JFK, changes to the team made between full time and the beginning of extra time do not count as subs, so theoretically you could line out a new 15 and still have all subs in tact. evangelist (Longford) - Posts: 245 - 12/10/2009 12:08:21 451704 Link 0 |
You can name a new fifteen and still have 3 subs to make during the extra time. As far as I know no team sheet is handed in at the start of extra time which means that the referee does not know who is on the field. This means if it was in you to cheat you could probably make a few more changes at half time in extra time. A rather large hole in the rule book. thelongfella (Roscommon) - Posts: 66 - 12/10/2009 13:48:23 451801 Link 0 |
Yeah cards carry over and 3 subs only to be used in extra time . Dellboypolecat (Tyrone) - Posts: 15069 - 12/10/2009 15:36:39 451896 Link 0 |
