391319 Today the IOC approved the foreign sport of RUGBY and golf be added to the schedule of games beginning with the 2016 Games. Gaelic sports have just as broad a world wide following - even broader, since we also have women teams, then rugby. When will the GAA join the IOC and promote Hurley and Gaelic football for the Olympics?

An Ulster person? i'd say so

Firstly - How is rugby a foreign sport when it comes to the Olympics?
Secondly - You can't have a sport in the Olympics that is only played (seriously) in one country.

What next?
Australian Rules, American Football

We would never be able to explain the rules to the world. We cannot apply them here or explain them. Everyone seems to have a different opinion on them. Can you imagine trying to explain the aggressive foul rules to a Chinaman and then tell him that you do not have to apply them. Good luck. We have the most open to interpretation set of rules known in sports. We first have to define them. Then we must brainwash our referees with that definition. Then we have to brainwash the CCCC with them also and then hope there is not an outcry from some province or another claiming they are designed to suit some other province or worse again another country. Lord Kilkanin help us.

1. Can't complain about foreign sports and then call for Gaelic Games to be included in the biggest celebration of foreign sports going.
2. While Gaelic Games are popular in many countries, most of this is only going back 5/10 years and isn't strong enough to be able to compete with an Irish team.
3. We have the Railway Cup for promoting GAA abroad.

If you're serious about promoting the GAA get your coaching badges and take the U8s.

theres no argument, there is no chance of gaelic games ever being in the olympics. all the countries would be represented by irish players. the amateur spectrum of gaelic games would be the only thing that has anything that would be in the olympic ideals.

Don't think Ireland would win gold though. As the country is still unfortunately partitioned, I would expect GB and N Ireland to win gold being made up of players from the 6 counties. I'm not advocating partition here by the way. I detest it - just stating a point!

the fact that she refers to hurling as hurley indicates that she has no idea what she is talking about

Hello everybody.

Sorry i don't spell english so well it s not my mothertongue. I am french (should i apologize for that also? ;) )

I just wanted to tell you that interest for gaelic football is growing in my country since few years now, especially in Brittanny where the teams are almost exclusively composed of french players. (8 clubs in the breton league registered for 2009-2010 season)
Of course it s the beggining, the technical level is weak, and we play 11vs11 on soccer and rugby fields,
but we are working on it...
Gaelic Football is officialy teach in some college in brittany (since this year), and for the first yaer a breton team went to play in Ireland during the FEILE PEILE NA OG 2009.

Here is a link about Gaelic Football in Brittanny: podcast in english language.
www.gaelgames.com

We will accept all the help to promote this fantastic sport (even just visit us during a training or a tournament and tell us some tricks... ;) )
Here is the website of my club Vannes in Morbihan

http://www.vannes-football-gaelique.com/

And the French Federation of Gaelic Football (FFFG)

http://www.fffgaelique.info/

The league in Brittany

It probably seems to be a little bit weird for irish people to see foreiners playing to there National Sport, but if you find some interest in that, come in and support us, or maybe join us for a game during your Hollydays in France!

And we never know maybe will we see watch one day in Olympics Game a Gaelic Football Final betwenn France and Ireland ! :)

Best regards

Mighty stuff, believe it or not a few people over here actually play at petanque also, but i dont think we are quite hankering for olympic status yet. we probably need to promote huling in the 60% of the country where it is poor or non existant first

Check out these sites folks.

de l'Euroligue, sounds great with teams from Paris, Munich, Madrid, Amsterdam, Luxembourg, Barcelona and more.

I never thought I would see something like this.

@ dhorse
Sure but petanque is pretty more easy to play than Gaelic Football...
And actually the Japanese are not ridiculus during international competitons ;)
By the way how many coutrries in the world are seriously playing curling ? lol
My sentence about France vs Ireland was of course all about science-fiction ;)

@whitenred
Thank for the support ;)
But about the Euroleague it is indeed an interessing competition that is played during the summer in different cities, most players are irish peoples who lived in europe (Erasmus student very often ),but more and more non irish folks are playing years after years... (my first match in euroleague as player was again Jersey Island Team, rude defeat for us)
This is organized by The European County Board who is part of GAA oversee.

@Hoganstand moderators And actually it could be nice to add this county for user profiles i choose USA rather than UK but it does not fit me so well ^^

apols if any offence caused, its great to see people trying new sports all over the world and getting away from the Commercial merry go round of professional sport, thats where the GAA heads would like to see themselves, without paying the players of course. are the governing bodies of petanque trying to promote the game in ireland.

Cant agree with you about the Japanese, in my experience they are simply ridiculous.

not sure about the curling but i would reckon more than GAA, but thats not really relevant, why would the GAA want to be an olympic sport, its all about business.

maybe france and ireland will play a game of hurling, despite what the hurling supremacists like to think, any group of youngsters with ability and enthuasism, given proper and constant coaching can play top class hurling.

permet de participer tous dans le sport
