I hope you arent taking the p~~~!! Its called after the Irish revolutionary Countess Constance Markievicz. She was born in the county and was originally a Gore-Booth and lived at Lisadell House until she married a Polish count.

Ya Countess Markievicz was the involved in the 1916 rising fighting for Irish Freedom. Her Home was in North Sligo Lissadel where she greaw up and her Father the landlord gave back to the poor and her maiden name is Gore Booth. I think she knew WB Yeats at the time. Theres a statue of her in North Sligo as well, a Heroin. Her Markievicz name came from her marriage and is of Eastern European origin.

I think it has something to do with a woman from Sligo who was first female elected in the Dail. Not 100% sure about that. It was asked in a Sports quiz one night.

God I hope i am not making a fool of myself here. Genuine question. Was she elected in the landslide election of 1918 thus being the first woman elected to public office in the english Parliament but like all her colleagues did not take up her seat ? ( please go easy on me)
