Markievicz park is named after the first lady to be elected to Dáil Éireann, Constance Markievicz, who was a big player in the 1916 rising... maor_uisce (Tyrone) - Posts: 167 - 25/07/2009 11:11:04 361354 Link 0 |
Ya Countess Markievicz was the involved in the 1916 rising fighting for Irish Freedom. Her Home was in North Sligo Lissadel where she greaw up and her Father the landlord gave back to the poor and her maiden name is Gore Booth. I think she knew WB Yeats at the time. Theres a statue of her in North Sligo as well, a Heroin. Her Markievicz name came from her marriage and is of Eastern European origin. I think it has something to do with a woman from Sligo who was first female elected in the Dail. Not 100% sure about that. It was asked in a Sports quiz one night. Fredthered (Donegal) - Posts: 1144 - 25/07/2009 11:43:23 361375 Link 0 |
