Will Galway beat Mayo? Not if they have Willie Joe!

Sung at all the Mayo vs. Galway matches back in Willie Joe Padden's day. Now can be adapted to his son Billie Joe!

On hill 16 we never gave up hope
Without Jimmy Keaveney the man we call the pope
The last six minutes the hill was going mad
But Offaly and the Hogan they were looking very sad

There was 14 on, 14 was off
Jimmy's on the sideline havin a gawk
Heffo and the boys were working out a plan
How to beat the Offaly lads without the extra man

Oh, of the second half oh Dublin should be proud
We put it in the net twice to get the goal allowed
Oh Dubs may and Dubs may go
But history was made, six leinsters in a row

There was 14 on, 14 was off...

And then came the goal, it came from centre-field
Briany fists a tall ball down to Pat O'Neill
Anto O'Tooles pass I never will forget
Bernard Brogan hit a bomber and it landed in the net

There was 14 on, 14 was off...

We're with them when we win, we're with them when we lose
Roscommon and Kerry watch out for the super blues
We wont be easy beaten as long as we never yield
As long as theres a man to kick the ball upon the field

There was 14 on, 14 was off...

Might have a few small errors in there, its been a while since ive heard it sung. Maybe history will be made if this Dublin team win 7 in a row, would be very fitting if bernard brogan junior was leading the line as they did it.

The Bold Thady Quill is a famous song around Cork, it was a lampoon on some miserable old git of a farmer from Muskerry. In the song the writer portrays this teetotal souless person, as a mighty hurler, lover, drinker etc, one verse goes. At the great hurling match between Cork and Tipperary, twas played in the Park on the Banks of the Lee, Our own darling lads were afraid of being beaten and sent out for Thady to Ballinadee, Shur he hurled the ball right and left in their faces and showed the Tipperary boys hurling and skill, If they came on his lines he would certainly brain them, and the papers were full of the praise of Thad Quill. There are also a couple of songs written about Christy Ring and quite a number down here with various verses having strong references to hurling.

Sisco don't get me wrong, Slievenamon is a brilliant song and I know its sung by Tipp Hurling Supporters, just as The Banks is sung by Cork lads, and My Lovely Rose of Clare by Clare etc. but they are not really hurling songs, they are more County Anthems.

GAA songs are always rubbish, there is nothing like Boolavogue or Spancil Hill or THe Banks or decent county songs to rise the decibels but also foster a loyalty to a place or county. Some great county songs and would prefer them any day over any rubbish written by some local trying to cash in on the team making the All-Ireland.

A question that often pops up is does anyone have the lyrics to Kerry's 5 in a row song? I know a line of it:

They came from the north, south, east and west,
but to MickO's men they were second best...............

From Bundoran to the Rosses, Inishowen to Dungloe
We're walking tall in Donegal for everybody knows
We're in our first All-Ireland and we won't give up
'Til we cross the bridge in Lifford with the Sam Maguire Cup

When we came out of Ulster we left them all behind
We beat Cavan and Fermanagh and everything looked fine
When we met the men from Derry they gave us no chance at all
But the scoreboard read two points ahead when the ref called for the ball

From Bundoran to the Rosses, Inishowen to Dungloe
We're walking tall in Donegal for everybody knows
We're in our first All-Ireland and we won't give up
'Til we cross the bridge in Lifford with the Sam Maguire Cup

Then came the semi-final, we met Mayo from the West
They said we could not beat them for they were far the best
They said we had no answer for the man they called McHale
But Matt Gallagher ran round him like a small boat in a gale

From Bundoran to the Rosses, Inishowen to Dungloe
We're walking tall in Donegal for everybody knows
We're in our first All-Ireland and we won't give up
'Til we cross the bridge in Lifford with the Sam Maguire Cup

There's a football star in Donegal, he's called Martin McHugh
His brother James and Tony Boyle, they'll know what to do
Gary Walsh and Joyce McMullan, with their captain Molloy
With Declan Bonner and the rest, the Dubs we did destroy

But we can't forget the backroom boys and the bossman Brian McEniff
He spent 20 years, oh torrid years, with those words of 'only if'
To get our first All-Ireland, we must win one more match
If it comes our way we all can say it's Donegal's best catch

From Bundoran to the Rosses, Inishowen to Dungloe
We're walking tall in Donegal for everybody knows
We're in our first All-Ireland and we won't give up
'Til we cross the bridge in Lifford with the Sam Maguire Cup

We're walking tall in Donegal, with the Sam Maguire Cup

THEY JUST DON'T WRITE THEM LIKE THAT ANYMORE!!!!
