Always thought it would be interesting to see an interactive map of each GAA club's parish/catchment area across the country, there seems to be no such map on the internet. I've started off with a couple of club's areas from my county on 'MyMaps' and you can add as many club areas as you like by signing in your Google, click the 'Draw a Line' tool above to make a shape and drag the dots until you have it, use the 'Add Marker' tool to add the GAA pitch too JXV (Mayo) - Posts: 39 - 06/11/2017 15:42:01 2060806 Link 0 |

Very good and Andy Moran house in Roscommon, Aidan O Shea birth home in Ballinasloe (even though he says in the AIB add he was Mayo born and breed), and Lee Keegans birthplace in Waterford.

Very Complicated in most rural areas. Most clubs would have players playing for them who reside outside their parish boundary. However it would be very interesting to see an accurate map of all clubs - however I don't think we will ever see such a map imonmyway (Mayo) - Posts: 113 - 07/11/2017 17:37:16 2061044 Link 0 |
Careful EDH, Aidan O'Shea's home was in Creagh, Ballinsaloe which we all know is in Co. Roscommon although ye lads have been stealing bits of that too over the years . Hard work having to watch the Mayo, Galway and Westmeath lads who are all trying to take bits of our great county. Having said all that , drawing the club maps would reveal that Four Roads and Athleague Hurling clubs and St Aidans, Creggs, St Croans in football all take in substantial parts of Co. Galway in their catchment areas. facethepuckout (Roscommon) - Posts: 219 - 07/11/2017 20:15:44 2061077 Link 1 |
Great idea. It'll probably need a media outlet to pick up on it and run a competition with a prize for the club or something. I've just done it for my club. Pitch location was easy obviously though I'd imagine there'll be a few that would contest my catchment area markings - there's been enough diputes over the years already about it!! Dublin clubs do not have catchment areas so impossible to do in Dublin. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13796 - 09/11/2017 11:34:44 2061378 Link 2 |
I see a third of our parish has been taken by our neighbours in Mayo Ardnaree/Ballina Stephenites - -how do we amend? overinthewest (Sligo) - Posts: 119 - 09/11/2017 12:04:56 2061386 Link 0 |
Figured it out As it turns out 1/3 of our population is grouped into that small area in Mayo - for the size of it a good return of co players for Sligo and Mayo (Tom Parsons issue again!) overinthewest (Sligo) - Posts: 119 - 09/11/2017 12:44:18 2061390 Link 0 |
so how is it decided what clubs players play for?

Is the hospital in Ballinasloe in Co. Roscommon? I never knew that. It does not matter where a player is born though...for example the entire Leitrim team would have been born outside Leitrim like all their county folk.

The hospital is in County Galway. Meath is another example. It depends on what part you are in but you could be born in Drogheda, Cavan, Mullingar or Dublin.
