GLASDRUMMAN BRING CELEBRITY BAINISTEOIR TROPHY NORTH
Glasdrumman (Down) 1-9
Dromahair (Leitrim) 0-11
On Friday Glasdrumman completed their mission of winning the Celebrity Bainisteoir series in a hard fought game in Parnell Park, Dublin against Dromahair of Leitrim. With Celebrity Bainisteoir, Derek Davis at the helm the Mourne men never gave up on their goal despite being behind for most of the game.
Dromahair made their intentions known from the start and playing with a strong breeze took the lead with a point from Shane Fowley in the second minute. Glasdrumman looked to be rather more nervous and missed a number of chances before drawing level with a Raymond Magorrian point on eleven minutes. Most of the play was now in the Dromahair half but the Leitrim were dangerous on the break and they took their chances to go three points ahead with points each from Christy McGowan, Kevin Conlan and John Evans. It looked as though Glasdrumman were not getting the rub of the green as shots from Connaire Harrison and Cormac Murphy rebounded of the post in quick succession, but as half time approached James McDowell swept up the ball on the fourteen yard line, jinked around the Dromahair defence and crashed the ball into the Dromahair goals to bring the scores level. Christy McGowan edged Dromahair ahead with a well taken point in the final minute of the half to leave the half time scores Glasdrumman 1-1 Dromahair 0-5.
Kevin Conlan increased Dromahair's lead with a point in the first minute of the second half but two points from Glasdrumman, one each for Connaire Harrison and Cormac Murphy had the sides level again on thrity four minutes. Kevin Conlan scored again a minute later and two more points from Dromahair's Stephen Smyth pushed them three points ahead with fifteen minutes remaining. Dromahair were very much in the driving seat at this stage but a Raymond Magorrian point fired Glasdrumman again and another point from Raymond Magorrian and another from Connaire Harrison in a three minute spree had the teams level again with ten minutes remaining. Yet again Dromahair went in front with another point from a Kevin Conlan free kick, only for Connaire Harrison to level the scores again with a pointed free kick. As the clock ticked into the final five minutes Connaire Harrison pointed again to edge Glasdrumman in front for the first time in the game. Dromahair's Kieran Meehan then went on a strong run upfield which resulted in an equalising point. Connaire Harrison scored the final point of the game on sixty minutes but Dromahair still had two chances to equalise in a nervous three minutes of added time. The referee finally blew his whistle to leave the final score Glasdrumman 1-9 Dromahair 0-11.
On the final whistle the Glasdrumman supporters flooded onto the pitch to congratulate their team and Celebrity Bainisteoir on their victory. This may not have been the best footballing performance from Glasdrumman but that was more than made up for in the team's grit and will to win. Ronan McDowell again commanded his goal area with authority and calmness. Christopher Cassidy and Ryan Doran at corner backs both had good performances, alongside man of the match Frank O'Neill who kept Dromahair's dangerous captain, Christy McGowan on a tight leash. The half back line of Art McCartan, Brian Burns and Mark Trimble swept up most of the loose ball around the centre of the field and made it very difficult for the Dromahair forwards. The midfield pairing of Colm Gribben and Pat Mallon had strong games and fought for every ball in the centre. The half forwards Sean McDowell, Cormac Murphy and James McDowell chased every ball and James' goal was taken brilliantly. Full forwards Raymond 'Mo' Magorrian, Raymond Clarke and Connaire Harrison were magnificent as they continually chased back when required and took their scores well at vital points in the game. Substitute Colum Carr entered the fray at an important time, with the game on a knife edge and he contributed excellently to the game, making good use of the ball when in possession.
Another job well done, by the players, Celebrity Bainisteoir, Derek Davis, team management and of course, the supporters.
