Carryduff U14 Ladies Retain Down Feile Title
Carryduff Under 14 Ladies travelled to a sunny but windy St. Malachy's, Castlewellan on Saturday 15th of March in confident mood having won the Belfast U14 Winter League in February. The girls were under pressure to emulate last year's Carryduff U14 team who won the county Feile in Clonduff.
Carryduff were grouped with Rostrevor, Bredagh, Newry Bosco, Dundrum and Kilcoo. Group games were short 7.5 minute matches. First up were Rostrevor and Carryduff starting with a strong line up including Maria McCann, Niamh Meehan, Catherine Price, Anna Quinn, Rebecca Laverty, and Susie Hyland all moving up from U12s last year. The girls settled well with two scores from Orla Swail. Leah Beattie added a point before Orla scored another point and a goal to complete a 1-3 to 0-0 win.
Next up were our main rivals for the Feile and near neighbours Bredagh. In a typically close fought game Carryduff got off to a good start scoring two points with Orla Swail finding the target and Beth O'Neill scoring the second. Bredagh came back well though levelling the game. Bredagh struck again but Carryduff levelled with a point from Leanna Gunn. A draw looked on the cards before Bredagh took the points with a last minute goal.
The girls then got back on track a win over Newry Bosco 2-2 to no score with Leah and Anna Quinn getting the goals. Further wins over Dundrum and Kilcoo followed as the girls started to get to grips with the tournament allowing full use of Carryduff's large squad of 26. Samantha Gilmore, Holly McHugh, Niamh Irvine, Riannah Campbell, Molly Lyons, Orla McGinity, Cora Sherry and Ciara Price all getting match time. Goals now coming thick and fast from Leah Beattie, Orla Swail, Beth O'Neill, Orla Swail and Orla Boyle.
The final group game against Kilcoo brought another win 2-1 to 0-0. Emma McNulty getting in the action with two goals. Jenny and Carla Collins and Louise McReynolds now getting in on the action.
With Bredagh and Carryduff going through to the semis it was Bryansford next up for the girls. Carryduff were now into their stride and impressively swept aside a good Bryansford team 2-4 to 0-0. This time it was Leah Beattie and Susie Hyland scoring points and another goal from Emma McNulty. Carryduff new girl Michelle Magee found her range slotting over two great long range scores.
Final v Bredagh
In a repeat of last year's final, Carryduff determined to revenge their earlier group defeat made a good start with Orla Swail scoring another point followed by a Leanna Gunn point to make it 0-2 to 0-0 at half time. A large Carryduff support made themselves heard roaring the girls on. Turning into a second half wind it was now the Carryduff's defenders turn to step up and working tirelessly restricted Bredagh to limited chances. Determined performances from goal keeper Nicola Andrews, Orla Boyle, Ciara Tolan, Niamh Meehan, Una Deegan, Catherine Price and Maria McCann kept the Bredagh front line out again and again. Michelle Magee notably winning several hop balls to ease the pressure. A nervy finish wasn't helped by some 3 minutes additional time but Carryduff held on to clinch a well deserved and second successive county Feile title.
Carryduff Squad - Nicola Andrews, Leah Beattie, Orla Boyle, Rihanna Cambell, Carla Collins, Jenny Collins, Una Deegan, Yasmin Fitzpatrick, Samantha Gilmore, Leanna Gunn, Suzie Hyland, Niamh Irvine, Rebecca Laverty, Molly Lyons, Michelle Magee, Emma McNulty, Maria McCann, Orla McGinity, Holly McHugh, Louise McReynolds, Niamh Meehan, Beth O'Neill, Anna Quinn, Catherine Price, Ciara Price, Cora Sherry, Orla Swail, and Ciara Tolan
