Buncrana Senior and Reserve team made the long journey to Mountcharles on Saturday evening last to take on St.Nauls in the league. After the long journey it was important for the Scarvey men to get off to a good start and this they did courtesy of the sure-footed free taking of Odhran Doherty who scored two points in quick succession against a very stiff breeze. Indeed it was the same strong breeze that kept this game a low scoring one and, for the spectators who braved the elements this was a very scrappy and unexciting game of football. For Buncrana, Oisin Doherty and Ciaran Mc Callum put in fine personal performances on the half back line and Stephen Rodgers was solid in defence throughout the game. Buncrana played the better and deserved the 3-point lead at the break. In the second half, Naomh Ultan fought back to level the score but once again Oisin Doherty_s free taking was on target and Buncrana kept in front as the game entered the final stages. Paul Mc Gonigle_s influence on the game increased as time wore on and he scored a fine point from inside the 45 line. The Naomh Ultan forwards were not giving up and it took an excellent save from goalkeeper, Noel O_ Donnell to deny the home side and keep Malachy Mc Cann_s men ahead. Buncrana ran out winners on a final score line of 0-09 to 0-08. The Reserves playing with the strong breeze were first to get on the score-sheet when Adrian Doherty pointed from a long -range shot. Odhran Mc Briarty had a good game showing for and winning a lot of ball to make it easy for the forwards to get their scores. Philip Scott_s well -taken goal ensured that the visitors approached the half- time whistle with a comfortable lead of 1-04 to the home side_s 0-01. Buncrana, playing against a very strong breeze in the second half, had to work hard as St. Naul fought back and scored a well -taken goal from their corner forward and three points from frees in quick succession. Certainly at this point the home side appeared the more determined until Buncrana got a lucky break with Feargal Mc Menamin in a strong position and with only the goalkeeper to beat, Feargal slammed the ball in the back of the net. St. Nauls piled on the pressure and were rewarded with a goal for their efforts but it was too late and Buncrana ran out winners on a score-line of 2-08 to 2-06. On behalf of all club members I would like to extend greetings to the club_s president, Dennis Bonner who celebrates his birthday this week. Beir bua is mile beannachtai, a Dhonnacha. Good luck to Donegal Minor manager, Sean Clerkin and his team as they take on Tyrone Minors in the Ulster Semi-Final in Clones next Sunday. Congratulations to club members, Chris Walshe and Brian Mc Makowski on their respective appointments to Hurling Prmotions Officers, South and North Donegal sections. A special Adh Mor to all players and club members who are doing exams or awaiting exam results at the moment. There was no winner of the jackpot in the weekly Lotto. The numbers drawn were; 6, 10,13 and 16. Next week_s jackpot will be 9,510 euro. The 20Euro winners were; Susan Kelly, Dunaff, Urris, Mary Mc Gonigle, Trillick, Anne O_Doherty, c/o Bingo, Kevin Mc Gouugh, St. Mary_s Road and Francis Craig, 69, The Woods. Please note that anyone travelling to Clones on Sunday next for Donegal_s championship match against Derry tickets are available at the turnstiles except for the Gerry Arthur stand, which should be ordered from club secretary, Patricia Mc Menamin, immediately. MALIN GAA NOTES This weekend Donegal seniors and minors are in Ulster semi-final action in Clones, the seniors meet Derry while the minors, where Malin's Declan Walsh is a regular in the half back line and Danny Greene is also a panellist, take on Tyrone with both sides aiming to qualify for the 2006 Ulster final. Start times are 12-30 for the minor match and 2-15 for the senior game and admission to the terracing is €20 with U-16s free, best of luck to both Donegal sides. The U-14s have begun their County Division 2 campaign with one win from two games. They lost their opening fixture away to Moville by 5-08 to 3-07, a good first half performance from Malin with scores from Cathal Kelly(1-02), Daniel McDaid(1-02), Mark McKinney(1-01), Brendan McLaughlin and Sean Doherty. They had a good victory over Glenswilly in the second outing, a great team performance with especially good displays from full back Keiran McColgan, centre back Patrick McLaughlin and the mid-field pairing of Daniel McDaid and Cathal Kelly seeing Malin win by 3-11 to 2-05. The reserve team went down fighting to St.Eunan's on Sunday on a score line of 1-06 to 2-08. The corresponding fixture in L'kenny earlier in the year had seen the cathedral town side easily over come N. Padraig but the hosts were determined to make a game of it in Ture. In the first minute sixteen year old Mark Doherty saw his shot rebound off the under side of the cross bar to safety. Some good dead ball kicking from Declan McLaughlin kept the home side just ahead in the earlier stages & Gary McKinney & Thomas McLaughlin were doing well to contain most of what Eunan's threw at them. Corner back, Colm McColgan collected a short free inside his own half & after racing to the "45", he stroked over a brilliant point to lead by 0-06 to 0-05 at the break. The visitors got off to a much better start in the second half with an early goal to go in front for the first time. Injuries to Declan McLaughlin & John Paul Atchison took the wind out of the N. Padraig sails & the only second half score was a Mark Duffy goal. Mean while the Eunan's forwards were now finding their range with more ease & they tagged on enough points to pull gradually away to a comfortable victory in the end but not before a scare. Best for N. Padraig were Colm McColgan, Dwain Robb & Charlie Molloy. Basic coaching & skills development for boys & girls aged seven to ten years old continues on Saturday from 11am until 12.15pm. Trained coaches will be available to deliver a programme suitable to each child's age & ability, with the emphasis on fun & enjoyment. The annual Summer camp will take place this year from 10th to 14th of July. The camp was a great success last year with over seventy children enjoying the skills of football, hurling, rounders & camogie. Applications forms are available in local schools. Training for U/14 boys takes place on Wednesdays, from 6.00pm until 7.00pm. A bus will leave Clar at 5.30pm & St. Mary's Hall at 5.45pm. All new members welcome. At a recent club meeting a need to recruit new under age referees was highlighted. With out referees the club & the Inishowen Board can not run meaningful competitions & it is imperative that a flow of new refs continues on a regular basis. If any senior player or former player would like to help in this way then please contact the club committee for details. At this point C.L.G. Naomh Padraig would like to thank Sean Lynch for his many years of service in the black as he has this season decided to hang up his whistle. Return of trophies The following cups and trophies have yet to be returned to the chairman of the fixture's committee, Sean Kelly. The are now long overdue for return. They are the senior and reserve championship cups, the u-21 cup, the reserve league, the intermediate and intermediate reserve cups as well as the silverware for divisions 1A, 1B, 2 and 3.
