Burt
The senior footballers beat Na Rossa 0-10 to 0-7 on Sunday evening. Switched from Doochary to Hibernian Park, Burt used the switch to their advantage. With the wind behind them, Burt gained a lead early with plenty of support from all over the park contributing to the lead. A well-worked point from Enda McDermott and two excellent frees by Joe Boyle gave Burt a four point advantage but some needless frees were exploited by Na Rossa and Burt led by just 0-5 to 0-3 at half-time.
After a number of early second half wides, Paddy McDermott and Brian Sheerin hit vital points for Burt but it was the defensive work by the team that helped close out a victory with Rory Grant and Seamus O'Donnell cleaning up in the backline. This victory sets up an encounter with league leaders Fanad Gaels which is on this Friday night at home.
Having squandered a ten point lead, Burt drew their first match of the Ulster Hurling League at home to Rasharkin on Saturday night. Burt led 3-12 to 1-8 with four minutes to go but a combination of a lack of concentration from Burt and pressure from the Antrim side levelled the game 3-12 to 4-9.
Burt were in the ascendancy for most of the game but lost Niall Campbell to injury early on. Ronan McLaughlin and Paddy Strain hit 2-3 and 1-3 respectively and good work by the half-back line should have ensured a victory but ultimately it was the concession of late goals that cost Burt the win. One highlight was the display by the evergreen Fergal Grant, showing he's not ready to give up without a fight. Next up for the hurlers is Lisbellaw next Saturday. Training is on Wednesday night at 7pm.
The reserve footballers played Na Rossa reserves on Sunday but lost 3-5 to 0-11. Burt had plenty of possession but failed to convert their opportunities and hit a fortune of wides. A reserve game next week is unlikely with the seniors playing on Friday night. Training is on this Thursday night at usual time.
The U12 blue and gold teams recorded good victories over Muff last Tuesday night in Burt. The Blue team won 8-4 to 0-3 with good performances all around the park, with Mark Coyle, Tony Cregan, Kyle Long and Karen Kelly very impressive. There are no matches tonight (Tuesday) due to a bye but training continues this Saturday morning 10.30am-12 noon for U10s and the U12s. Please note that not all membership has been received by the club for underage and it is important everyone is properly insured for the playing season.
The U16 and minor footballers recorded walkovers against Muff last Tuesday and Wednesday nights. The u-16s have no game this week but the u-18s are out on Wednesday night and they are home to Malin.
The U14 footballers qualified for the next round of Féile na nÓg finals after beating Malin on Saturday morning by 2-11 to 2-6 at Hibernian Park. This Saturday they go to the Northern Board blitz finals, all parents will be informed of travel details by text message.
There was no winner of the lotto jackpot last week. Donal Campbell won 40. The numbers drawn were 7, 6, 4, 1, 5, 3, 2. Next week's jackpot is 1,350. Anyone with lotto's should have them in the clubhouse by Thursday night at 8.15pm or hand it to any club member.
The U14 hurlers are playing this Thursday night against Buncrana in Hibernian Park. The U18 hurlers travel to Buncrana and to play the same opposition.
Club membership for the year is now due and should be paid immediately. It is 50 for players, 20 for non-players and 10 for underage players. Contact Rory Grant or any Executive member for more information on membership/registration. All senior players who have membership outstanding should pay it immediately. All underage team managers are responsible for obtaining membership from their players.
Underage hurling training is on every Monday from 6pm to 7.30pm for U8s up to U12s and the U14 camogie team. Everybody must bring 1 for training and everyone is reminded to bring helmets and other equipment. All underage players must arrive at pitch for 5.55pm.
The U10s have a hurling blitz this Sunday in Magherafelt.
The Club has 10 tickets available for the Donegal GAA Banquet which takes place in the Abbey Hotel on Friday 24 April 24 at 8.30pm. The guest speaker at this year's banquet is former Kerry manager Mick O'Dwyer and new GAA president Christy Cooney will also attend. Tickets cost 70. Anyone interested in going can contact Damian Dowds and haggle over the ticket price!
Carn
An away fixture against Fanad Gaels, who were relegated from Division 1B last year, was always going to be a tough assignment. Having won their first two league outings, Carn were not under any illusions when they travelled to play them last Saturday evening. Unfortunately while they were able to match them in terms of football ability, the sheer physical strength of the opposition was just too much for the young Carn team.
Having had the advantage of a strong breeze in the first half of the Reserve game, Carn gave away a soft goal at the beginning of the second period and had to play catch up. Failure to keep possession and some poor passing made the task of winning this game and uphill struggle. At midfield Richard Cunningham and Andrew Doherty worked hard to gain possession while half forwards Kevin Kelly and Benny Doherty made good runs and gave the opposing back plenty of problems. William Mooney defended well playing at corner back. The panel was: Shane Gibbons, William Mooney, Shane Donaghey, Shane Hartin, Paul McLaughlin, Sean Doherty, Tiarnan Coyne, Richard Cunningham, An drew Doherty, Christy McLaughlin, Kevin Kelly, Benny Doherty, Liam Doherty, Shane Devlin, Shane Doherty (G), Fergal Doherty, Paul Lafferty, Paul Canny, George McGuiness, Kevin Doherty (T), Eamonn McColgan, Hugh Doherty.
In the senior game Carn were under pressure from the very start. Fanad were a well drilled outfit and their superior physical strength showed in the first five minutes when their centre forward Eamonn Sweeney made a run through the Carn defence to score their opening goal. While they did not score any more goals in the first period, their quick handling of the ball, slick passing and straight running saw them lead at half time by 1-7 to 0-2. More of the same ensued in the second half and their final tally of 2-15 to 0-7 was deserved. However Carn can take heart that when they contested more in the second half they secured some good possession and Garvan McGrenra worked hard, scoring three fine points. Carn are not accustomed to playing in such a tight pitch and will be looking forward to the replay in the more open arena of O'Dochartaigh Páirc. The panel was: Martin Mooney, Michael Nelson, Michael McLaughlin, Aiden O'Callaghan, Conor Doherty, Rory Ward, Gerard Doherty, Dominic Doherty, Ryan Davenport, Cathal O'Kane, Garvan McGrenra, Eanna Newton, Liam Shiels, Fergal Mathews, Emmet Doherty, Christy McLaughlin, Declan O'Donnell Robert McCartney, Cathal Doherty.
The U12s are away to Moville tonight, Tuesday, while the U16s are home to Moville. Tomorrow, Wednesday, the Minors play Moville. In the Northern Board Competition the U16s play Red Hugh's away on Friday 17 April.
On Thursday 16 April the U14s will play MacCumhaill's in Foden and the minors will travel to Ballybofey. A camogie sponsored marathon has been organised for Saturday 18 April in Páirc Uí Dhochartaigh Foden. This is open to all camogie players and all sponsorship no matter how small is welcome by the club. This year the camogie club will take part in the Ulster Feile for the first time ever. As a result a new underage camogie kit is required complete with crest etc. Sponsorship cards will be distributed to all camogie members this week. For further details contact Nuala Lafferty. All U10 and U8 girls are asked to attend camogie training on a Friday evening from 6.30-7.30pm starting from Friday 17 April. Fee is 2 and players are required to be 6 years old. Hurls and helmets are supplied if you not have your own.
The winning numbers in the club mini-lotto were 15, 2, 5, 3 and 24. There was no jackpot winner. The 75 went to Eileen Lafferty, Redcastle. 30 to Bronagh Doherty, Priestown, Carn. 15 to Frank Skinnader, Emyvale. Bernie Skinnader, Carn and Jim and Mary Morgan, Gortin Ballyloskey, Carn. The jackpot next week is 3,900 and the draw will be held in the Sportsman's.
The monthly club meeting will be held at 9pm tonight, Tuesday 14 April.
Naomh Colmcille
The senior and reserves played away to Naomh Pádraig, Lifford on Saturday evening last. The reserves lost out in the last few minutes of the game after a good performance by all players. The senior game ended all even at 0-6 apiece, with Naomh Colmcille coming back in last five minutes with a final point to seal a well deserved draw. It was good to see so many Naomh Colmcille supporters out - keep it up.
Next weekend the seniors and reserves are at away to Muff. Senior & Reserve Training continues every Tuesday & Thursday at 8pm sharp. All new players very welcome. Even those just looking for some excellent fitness training.
