The U13's held a coaching session on Good Friday from 10am to 1pm and 42 players turned up. The players worked really hard on skills and really enjoyed the session. Next session is Saturday 26th April at 11am.
The U14's had 44 players in attendance on Saturday. The first 20 players were put through their paces in a greulling fitness test and all players were videod and results databased for future reference. The other 24 took part in leinster blitz with wexford and laois. The team put on a serious display and saw ran out comfortable winners, with Adam Hughes, Daniel Ging, Conor Kearney and Andrew Conway leading the way. Unfortunately, the second game with Laois saw Wicklow lose out in an extremely well balanced game. Tadghe O"Toole and Pauric Murray put in outstanding displays at full back and full forward to put the icing on a very encouraging morning. The next session will be held next Saturday at 11am in ballinakill where the team will train and then discuss nutrition.
A ruthless Wicklow U16 team demolished a hapless Wexford in their first competitive fixture of the year. The Wicklow players held an advantage in all sectors and scored freely from the start. With the half time score of 5-11 to 0-1, the game was long over as a contest. The management were pleased not just with the score line but with the overall standard of skill, in particular the unselfish running off the ball and excellent tackling. This is a hard-working and committed team and there was no question of a lesser effort in the second half. Scores continued to flow and the defence remained determined and organised throughout. Wexford did manage a very late consolation goal but the final score of 8-22 to 1-4 reflects the absolute dominance of Wicklow. It was agreed that both Wexford and Wicklow would field the reminder of their squads in a second game. The possibility of some redemption for Wexford was quickly dispelled as these Wicklow players clearly wished to make an impression. The final score of 1-12 to 0-1 completed a very satisfying day for the Wicklow U16s. The selectors will be faced with some difficult decisions after today's performances. All Wicklow players made outstanding contributions. Saoirse Kearon, Jack McCall, and Daire Fitzgerald were particularly strong in defence. The midfield pairing of Cal Kelly and Robert Kelly held the upper hand throughout. Cormac O'Shea, Jack D'Arcy and Conor Byrne were noteworthy in a forward line that scored at will.
Finally, Team Wicklow ambassadors are continuing to recruit members with a great response to date.
