Wexford great Bennett dies

October 20, 2006
The death has occurred of former Wexford hurling star Liam Bennett after a short illness. Bennett, who was a member of the Wexford team that lost the 1976 and '77 All-Ireland finals to Cork, took ill on Sunday morning while out cycling with members of the Wexford Wheelers Club. He was taken to Wexford General Hospital where he died on Wednesday night, October 18, having been taken off a life-support machine. He was 55. Liam had been due to attend a ceremony during last Sunday's county senior hurling final at Wexford Park, honouring him and his team-mates of the 1981 Faythe Harriers championship winning team. He was a well-known contract painter in Wexford town.
