Under 16 Championship
Some weeks back our U16 hurlers captured the Div. 3 Championship title with a great win over a very strong and physical St Brigids team. After finally committing to some serious training and effort, this squad realized their potential with a great semi final victory over Turin. This set the team up nicely for the final against St Brigids in a well presented Springfield on a day perfect for autumn hurling. They hurled well from start taking the game to their opponents, electing to play into a strong breeze but matching St Brigids score for score. Eventually Plunketts got the goal they deserved to take a lead of 4 points but credit to St Brigids, they forced their way back on the score board and was it not for some whole hearted defending by Sean Kelly, Davy Purcell and Sean O'Brien the teams would have been level at half time. A rousing half time speech by Donal Liddy set the theme for the second half, Luke Byrne was outstanding at centre back and Paddy Lynam scored points that any senior player would be proud of. Plunketts stretched their lead to 7 points, St Brigids did not give up and they fought to the end, testing our defence who knuckled down and did not yield an inch. At the final whistle Plunketts ran out winners on the score-line of 2.15 to 1.11. Overall this was a fantastic team victory with Conor Bracken, Niall Kevin, Sean Flanagan, Niall O'Toole, Ryan Purcell and Stephen Hassett to the fore. Luke Byrne and Paddy Lynam collected the silverware on behalf of the squad. They thanked St Brigids for the sporting game and then thanked team mentors Clive Kenny, Michael "Cosy" Coyle and Frank Mullen for their commitment to training during the previous number of weeks. The lads also gave mention of thanks to two mentors absent on the day, Aiden Cannon and Nicky Quinn. Well done to all concerned. U16 squad; Sean O'Brien, Davy Purcell, Sean Kelly, Sean Flanagan, Luke Byrne, Andrew Allen, Donal Liddy, Niall Kevin, Ryan Purcell, Niall O'Toole, Craig Reilly, Paddy Lynam, Conor Bracken, Ross Corroon, Stephen Hassett, Conor Mount, Robert Kindregen, Glen Gilchreist, Callum Crighton, Alan Kevin and Darren Carter. Thanks to F Mullen for the notes.
