Successful weekend for St Brendans GAA Manchester
July 17, 2012
St Brendan's Junior and Senior teams both secured victories in their respective games over the weekend.
Lancashire Senior League - St Brendan's v Oisins
Moved from a waterlogged Old Bedians to Hough End, this fixture was the first time this season Manchester rivals St Brendans and Oisins played each other. In wet conditions, St Brendans made all the early running and took an early lead in the match with points from Keiren Delaney and Stephen Sands. Oisins then replied with a point before St Brendans forward Liam Kelly scored two consecutive goals to give the home side an eight point lead. Stephen Sands fielded strong in the middle of the park and the back line of Patrick Collins and Paddy Murphy ensured Oisins were kept at bay from scoring further points. Oisins were then awarded a controversial penalty which was then saved by the quick reflexes of Alder in goal. Further points for St Brendans were scored by blood-sub Brian Johnston and half-forward Garret Owens. The Didsbury outfit then pulled another point back as they tried to get back into the game.
Half Time: St Brendan's 2-6 Oisins 0-3
With the rain now coming down heavy at Hough End, St Brendans started the second half well with points coming from Keiren Delaney, Stephen Sands and Liam Kelly. Oisins came back with a point shortly after but after this found it difficult to score. Continued pressure from the St Brendans full-forward line then resulted in Colm Conway and Keiren Delaney scoring goals to give the men in maroon and white a big advantage going into the final third of the second half. Soon after, Brendan's captain John Gibney precisely placed the ball between the posts from a well taken free. A quick goal-kick then resulted in Oisins going on the attack up the field to score their sixth point of the game. The last score of the game came from St Brendan's, a well worked move resulting in Johnston finding a score from range.
Full-Time: St Brendan's 4-11 Oisins 0-6
Lancashire Junior Championship Backdoor - St Brendan's v St Ann's
With a place in the Junior Championship semi-final up for grabs, both teams put out strong line-ups in this fixture at a sunny Hough End on Sunday afternoon. St Brendan's forward Liam Kelly opened the scoring for St Brendans with a point early on before half- forward Lee Gavin putting the home side two points up. St Anns weren't long in replying from the early pressure from St Brendans as they scored a well taken point quickly. Further points from Brendan's forwards Kelly and Gavin then gave the home side a three point lead. St Anns then started to lay pressure on the Brendan's full-back line which resulted in a goal for the Turn Moss outfit to make it level. Full-forward Colm Conway then pulled a point back for St Brendans. St Ann's then pulled a point back to make it level just before the interval.
Half-Time: St Brendan's 0-5 St Ann's 1-2
The home-side started the second half strongest with two consecutive points from Lee Gavin, which gave St Brendans the advantage. St Brendan's full-forward Colm Conway then slotted home a penalty which was awarded to the home-side after some foul play in the box by St Ann's. A further goal and point from Conway then gave St Brendans a good advantage going into the middle of the second half. Liam Kelly then scored three consecutive points for the men in maroon and white. Pressure from St Anns resulted in the away side scoring two goals in the last five minutes but the comeback came too late in the game.
Full-Time: St Brendan's 2-11 St Ann's 3-3
