March 18, 2003
ULSTER JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL (Paul Kerr Cup) CORDUFF (Monaghan) 1-8 BALLERIN (Derry) 0-8 Monaghan junior champions for 2002, Corduff Gaels, were crowned junior football club champions of Ulster when they had three points to spare over Derry champions Ballerin at the end of a hugely entertaining final in Shamrock Park, Cremartin. Corduff could well have had this title wrapped up at the half-way stage such was their dominance in the first half but poor finishing that saw them hit 13 wides in the first half left it all to play for with just four points in it at the break, Corduff 1-4 to Ballerin 0-3, Martin McDermott getting the goal in the 17th minute. In the second half Ballerin came much more into the game and by the 20 minute mark they had drawn level with three points on the trot from Malachy Quinn, free, and two by Barry Doherty to make for a grandstand finish. Ballerin however well unable to consolidate at this stage as Corduff rallied strongly in the final 10 minutes to hit three points without reply from Mark Gilsenan, Raymond Byrne and man of the match Shane Malone to deservedly book their place in the All Ireland semi-final which takes place in Shamrock Park, Cremartin, next Sunday at 3.00 p.m.. Ballerin finished the game with 14 players when D J Moore was sent off in the final minutes for a second bookable offence.
