Christ no! ... not Michael Collins. He could be worth ten points to Galway. Remember 2001? He refereed that final and gave Galway everything, twice as many frees. Had nightmares of the man since and poor old Ollie Murphy when Collins made sure Donegal beat us in the All-Ireland quarter-finals the following year netfinder (Meath) - Posts: 6 - 05/07/2011 11:58:48 975170 Link 0 |

Are the GAA gone stark raving mad in appointing Collins to referee a Meath game with Galway. The bitter memories from 2001 are still vivid in my gut. Every Meath person at that match remembers the antics of the Corkman amd a cameo performance arrived the following year when he gave some crazy decisions in favour of Donegal and made sure Ollie Murphy obtained a long suspension. Lads it made no real differece in 01 who reffed the game the right team won. We should also remember that we got a pretty dubious penalty in the final in that same game!! He was poor alright the following year, but lets get on with it hopefully we wont need his assistance on Saturday evening. Jgc81 (Meath) - Posts: 195 - 05/07/2011 13:04:44 975265 Link 0 |

I don't think Michael Collins will be an issue. After his performances in the early 00's, one of the top GAA journalists did a piece on Collins reffing Meath games in a national newspaper. He looked at 8 games over a 2 year period where Collins reffed us 4 times (seems a lot in a short period) and 4 different refs were involved for the other 4 games. He found that consistently the 4 seperate refs gave Meath roughly the same amount of frees but Collins consistently only gave Meath half the amount of the other 4. Collins I don't think has reffed a Meath game since although I'm open to contradiction but I'd say there was an amount of egg on face for him and the GAA when the statistics were revealed. Alot of people were saying it at the time about Collins but the GAA were as dismissive as ever until the report was done. I may be wrong but I think it was Martin Breheny who done the analysis. I don't say it often, but Sean got it very wrong in 2001. Derry Savage gave Mark O'Reilly the run around in the first half. Fay barely gave Padraig Joyce a touch of the ball in the same period. Fay was on target for All Ireland and Footballer of the Year until Sean switched him onto Savage. Padraig Joyce ran riot and Declan Meehan had the freedom of the park to run at us giving him man of the match and footballer of the year. The Meath/Galway all ireland game was 10 years ago time to move on. galway were the better team on the day nuff said. no referee done meath out of that game werent good enuff simple as. people were whinging 2 weeks ago about maurice deegan being referee for the louth game and he had a great game. Meath are playing at home v a galway team that arent so hot at the moment and yet people on this are complaining about the change in referee. if meath are any good they should beat galway. doesnt matter who the referee is. so dont mind who the referee is he has a job to do. the players also have a job to do. db9 (Meath) - Posts: 283 - 05/07/2011 14:48:53 975421 Link 0 |

Mick Collins eh? yet another two fingers pointed directly at us Royals this seasons by the spineless pencil pushers at HQ. First Syl Doyle, then Farrells suspension, then Deegan (who disappointingly enough for them had a decent game) and now what could well be the final insult of our season, the dreaded Collins! All this because they were the ones who were too gutless to deal with last years leinster final fiasco and so dumped it on our doorstep, ridiculous carry on! Gammy, I actually though reading the frist couple of lines of your post that "Hey here's a sensible post from Gammy" but alas you had to get the little subtle dig at Meath. Diego (Meath) - Posts: 1210 - 05/07/2011 15:54:10 975506 Link 0 |

Thought he was retired, obviously still hates us since 87 & 88.remember him putting hank traynor off for nothing in the all ireland q/f replay against westmeath early in the 1st half.def worth 3 points to galway. thelutch (Meath) - Posts: 1146 - 05/07/2011 18:21:02 975679 Link 0 |
