Abandoned game

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Jake - yes, good memory, I know all about it and I did qualify my statement about that ( if you check above ) knowing full well that in 1965 Martin Quinn sat on the ball and no man dared to take it off him in the senior final. Not a great way to lose or win a senior championship but it's a good story and wouldn't we love to relive some of those days when Kilbride were not easily beat by any team.

Carryonhurling - you may be right about your prediction, anyway you are wrong to say anyone is attacking or spinning, I think if you read my posts above I didn't personalise it against the ref, nothing against him at all, I just gave a few facts about the mild manner of the game and that I don't think the game warranted being abandoned at all and I think that nearly all inside the grounds ( St. Marys own ambitions aside ) agreed at the time. Anyway, we will all put our points across and see what happens.

Clonard were 17 points up at the time so I doubt very much if it was them that started the melee.

I'm just after reading all the above posts and i'm guessing that none of the above posties are referees. I'm a referee and i have got abused and pushed in the back by players but i've never picked up the ball and abandoned a game because of it. If you go out and ref a game u have to be able to take the abuse from the players, if a player starts to abuses me i have a little chat with him and i inform him that any more backchat from him he will get a stright red and that usally stops the backchat. I also go to alot of club matches and i have to say Kilbride are no different than any other team in Meath that abuse the ref, i was at a Mary's last year and i have to say that people on Mary's sideline were no angels when it came to the ref giving a wrong decision against them. Before you all start having a go at me, i am not a Kilbride man.

Benny, without having a chat with the ref/umpire/neutral, or being present to witness the abuse, I don't think it fair or proper for you to say he shouldn't have abandoned the game. There worst aspect to come out of this, which has been confirmed on here by a Mary's player, is that the ref was told he would "be got" the next time he is seen out and about.

Meath on hill16 you clearly werent at the game this might sound biased but there was absolutely no indiscipline from clonard until the fight which duleek players started.

Were getting a bit off topic here, what do people think the county board will do in relation to the result. Personally I think it would be very wrong not to award the points to st.marys (mind you I am biased), but can see the county board copping out and ordering a replay.

Has anything like this happened in the recent past and if so what was the outcome?

If kilbride were the cause of the game being abandoned then their is only one outcome, they forfeit the points and a possible heavier penalty.

What is Meath football coming too, I think it is no coincidence that on one side we are talking about a referee abandoning a game because he got a bit of verbals and on the other side we wonder why a Meath football team is getting out played and out fought by Antrim and Donegal. We are Meath men and we play football like no other County traditional, hard, tough but fair.
If Meath football continues in this vain we will NEVER win another ALL Ireland. and it starts at the lowest level, when you put on any club Jersey in Meath you are representing Meath Football not Dublin, Kerry or Tyrone. I have played football all over Ireland like many of you have I'm sure and when you are in Galway or Kerry and you say you play for a club in Meath they expect you to be tough and strong and have a will to win that other counties only dream of and we are throwing this huge tradition away.

My second point is about the standard of refereeing in general if the GAA wants spoilt brats like any Premiership footballer running after the ref after every decision then it is going the right way, Personally I love the Rugby way real men who never say a word to the refs because the refs have respect, Why is this? It is because the ref enters the dressing room before EVERY game at EVERY level and tells the players what he expects and what he looks for ie rucks Scrums and pick ups, 4 steps in football etc then the players know what to watch for and if the player gives away a free its his fault because he has been told.

Kilbride are no angels but are no worse than other team in the Country this is not a Kilbride problem it is a GAA problem and going back to my first paragraph it is a Meath problem.

Let Meath clubs play the way Meath teams should and did play that is how we will be successful again.

Would have to agree with cechmate we are gone to soft.I used to do an umpire some years back, but the whinging of some players at the moment is unreal.
Something will have to be done about it,as for diving and feining injury, not enough red cards are giving out.Lets get back to some decent tough football and no whingers.

Great post. Agree 100%.
Theres a few people on high positions that could do with reading your paragragh regarding refs.
As for your other paragraghs, well everyone in the county should read it and take heed of it!

I have to agree with cechmate even though the topic has deviated from the issue of awarding the points.

I play both codes and the referees can be just as bad in rugby but the difference is the respect that is demanded and enforced by management and players.
The ref will tell you what he expects and as the game goes on you tend to figure out what he is going to be quick to blow for and what you can get away with.

The only time a referee spoke to us in a GAA changing room before the match was last year when there was the change in the fist pass rule.
This worked well as a goal was ruled out during the game as the assist was an illegal hand pass but all players accepted it as the ref informed the players beforehand.
I'm playing football along time now and I don't think I have ever seen a referee change his mind on a decision after someone shouted at him.

When I'm hit I get up and get on with it - We all shout "No Way" at a referee at times but this is human nature and referees need to be thick skinned enough to deal with it.
I find if I ask the referee in a civilized manner why he gave a free against me or did not give it then he will answer you - I mightn't agree but that's part of sport.
I wasn't at the game in question so not condoning any actions of either Kilbride or Mary's players and I don't know the level of abuse directed to the ref.
The onus has to be on the players themselves to enforce some respect as well as the mentors.
I wouldn't allow a fellow player to keep having a go at a ref no matter how bad he is as I don't want to play with 14 men.

As cechmate said we are all Meath men and need to play hard and fair but there's no need to abuse referees - even the ones that officiate from between the two 40 yard lines!!

oh my god, award the points to who,is that the way they want to earn their points,i was a neutral observer of that match in question, and what i saw was the ref walk off the pitch for absolutly nothing after missing a marys player strike a kilbride man off the ball, which would have even the teams up,with 10 to 15 minutes left and 4 or 5 points in it,not the 6 or 7 i seen on an earlier post, kilbride had just scored a goal and were on the up,even after all the decisions from the ref

abtan,

I wasnt goin to post on this topic again because it was getting off topic and I also didint want it to turn into a slaggin match bewteen st. marys and kilbride.

But for a 'neutral' you have a very biased version of events!!

Firstly the ref had dealt with the incident you are talking about and st marys man was not sent off so marys were still a man up, or why else were kilbride still complaining?

There was 6 points between the teams it was 1-6 to 2-9, not points

And there were 8 mins remaining in the match not the 15 your coming up with

Of course thats not the way we would like to win our points, we would much rather finish out a game that we were comfortable in and be able to celebrate our win...but due to kilbride's indiscipline that was not possible.

We will have to agree to disagree but I don't think the match warranted being abandoned at all, I think that there was a lot of extra time to be added ( assuming that the ref stopped his watch for the big stoppages ) and that Marys who had done well were starting to retreat into closing the game out and Kilbride were pushing hard to get back into it, by the way the ( only raising it because you mentioned it ) Kilbride man was actually not well after taking that hit off the ball - nobody is crying about it but honestly it was a bad blow. Anyway, I take your point and there will be no bad feeling between the clubs whatever the outcome is.

I have to agree with cechmate, football in Meath is gone very soft the last couple of years. I refereed a game about 2 yrs ago and i had 1 player looking for a free because his marker jump for a ball and landed on his toe and he want a free. ( i told him were to go, if he tought he was going to free for that) and in the same match 2 players were niggling at each other and when i told them to stop 1 of them said to me that the other player was saying things about his mother, the guy in Q was in his late 30's. I also have to agree that if you have a chat with the captians of both teams before the game and tell them what will happen if anybody acts up during the match, the ref will get more respect.

This thread is funny. Kilbride are nearly from Dublin so the referee should have known he was gonna be getting an earful for any decision made against them. Abondoning the game is silly.
