Brendan Murphy

(Oldest Posts First)

Brendan Murphy is back.He has left Longfordtown and played centre half-forward for trim.I think it is just a matter of time before Eamon picks up the phone. He would be a massive boost for the Dublin game.1 down(Murphy), one to go(Geraghty).
O'Rourke is a great goalkeeper but Murphy is more expierienced.Any way Gallagher looks to be finihed with his back problems.

Why would he have left Longford Town? When he left he said he joined Longford because he only had to train once a week and have a game at the weekend, I can't see him leaving so soon to be honest!

He left Longford Town after making two basic mistakes in their defeat to Wexford Youths last Friday night.

Tis true alright. Have a look at the Irish Time website in Sports Digest or otherwise the Longford Town website.

Looking at the Longford Town website, Murphy started all the games except for the last one against Waterford United, don't know if this is significant or not though

From the Longford Town website after they lost 2-1....

The biggest fall-out from last Friday's defeat has been the departure from the squad of goalkeeper Brendan Murphy. However, the manager is actively seeking a replacement before the clash so as to avoid a situation where he would have to don the gloves himself.

"Brendan has left the club by mutual consent and we wish him well. He is a great lad and a good goalkeeper but sometimes these things happen. I told the lads at training and it's gone and we move on. I chasing up some possibilities and I'm confident we'll have someone in by the weekend.

"I registered to play at the start of the season in case of emergency but it's not a situation I want to be in, so me playing is a last resort."

Longford town manger said this in an interview. "Brendan has left the club by mutual consent and we wish him well. He is a great lad and a good goalkeeper but sometimes these things happen. I told the lads at training and it's gone and we move on." Sounds slightly bitter about the situation...I'm probably reading too much into it but most people would have went with 'great' for both descriptions there. Heard the mistakes he made were absolute disasters. Must be turning into 'Calamity James' As good as he is, I dont know if it will make much of a difference if he comes back to the panel to be honest. We are blessed to have a wealth of good 'keepers in the county....

You got in with the quotes before me updaroyal.

Although that last quote isnt from Murphy, its from the manager himself (alan Gough), he's covering the nets while they look for a replacement!! He only conceded one against waterford as opposed to Bennys two clangers.

i would be hopeful o'brien will bring him back in - he's a brillant gaelic goalkeeper - possibly the best in the country - also it would be a good mentor for young o'rourke

I'm not sure about this to be honest (bringing him back). First of all let's just make it clear that there has been no suggestion he will be brought back that we know of, or indeed that he wants to come back. The Longford Town offer seemed to be the little push Murhphy needed to realise he wanted off the panel. He was interviewed on radio after he walked & said that he had been thinking about it for quite a while before he told Eamonn. Said that he hadn't been enjoying training as much as before, that the time committment was too much and that if playing Dublin in the 1st round didn't get you motivated then something was wrong. All this being the case, I can't see why he would want to come back, unless he has had a very dramatic change of heart. It would be very hard on O'Rourke to be dropped now as he has done well - I'm not sure about Gally's fitness, but he has to be a long shot to play v Dublin due to the amount of games he has missed. He is good back up though and also a good mentor. Even if Murphy has regained his hunger, EOB would risk upsetting the panel by bringing him back in at this point as it would effectively mean dropping either O'Rourke or (more likely) Gallagher from the panel which would not be good for morale. It will be interesting to see how this plays out, but personally I would be fairly surprised if BM was brought back, unless Gallagher's injury forced him off the panel.

Bring him back provided he has the appetite for the battle, Excellent keeper and has the experience which will be vital v Dublin.

Murphy is a great keeper but in all fairness its not another keeper we need. It's a good full back, a center half forward that can give leadership and be will to work twice as hard as anyone else on the team and a reliable full forward line.
The problem with the Meath team at the minute is they are a "Nice" handy team with very good style and footballing skill but none of them apart from Byrne and Kenny (propable the two smallest men on the team) are will to get stuck in and win the dirty ball, even 50 / 50 balls most of our players get it hard to win and sometime dont seem willing to even try and win. All any team has to do to beat Meath is play scrappy, we just cant handle it, our players dont know how to win the ball back or they seem to be afraid to tackle.
