Derry - Losing the tag

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Derry have largely been associated with being a one man forward and depending on Paddy Bradley, I think if our League Performance keeps up we can well and truley banish that tag. 8 players scoring last night, 6 last week? Times are looking up. What other tags are attatched to teams and are they deserved or not.

Agreed Niamh. Not one of yer forwards looked bad and the others have really stepped up to Paddys high standard.

About undeserved reputations. Were always slated for being a weak little team of 5ft7 blondey wee chaps and yes. we do rely a bit too much on such players but when people call us a team of weaklings and pushovers, I always say how Id love to introduce them to Darren Rooney and his ilk. Also these people forget that throughout much of our history we were the hardiest team in Leinster...even the biggest of Meath teams in the 90s hated meatin us cos we were such mullickers.
Anyway, I think its workin to our future benefit as the underage selectors now prefer to develop more physical players so well be a team of big fellas in a few years methinks.

Before anyone says it, Meath DO deserve the rep as a dirty team...theyve never lost that streak.

Down + Donegal - not suited to Ulster football nowadays- deserved!
Until either can win another Ulster title and break the Armagh Tyrone dominance then it's deserved. Until exceptionally talented players like McFadden, Stephen Griffin, Michael Murphy, Dan Gordon, Coulter play in an All Ireland Final/win an Ulster, then it sticks. Fermanagh and Monaghan have both come from nowhere and done better in Ulster in recent years.

Meath - always tough to beat- not so deserved anymore!
Meath were the football team that struck fear into most others for much of the late 80's, 90's and 00's. Famous for teak-tough players like Mick Lyons, Darren Fay. Last years collapse against Wexford and subsequent defeat against Limerick has put big question marks over that reputation.

Cork - soft centred - still to be disproved!
Cork have been the 3rd best team in the country the past few seasons but they have yet to come anywhere near winning an All Ireland. It is said Kerry struggle against the likes of Armagh and Tyrone in the big games when it matters most...well Cork struggle against Kerry so what does that say about them?

Limerick - Underated - Deserved!
Have lived in Cork and Kerry's shadow for the last 10 years and have not won a Munster in that time but that masks the marked improvement there's been in Limerick football in that time. Fine footballers like Ian Ryan in the side. A genuine threat to either Cork and Kerry in Munster.

Mayo have quality footballers- Deserved!
Mayo may not have fulfilled their potential in winning an All Ireland in the last 10 years but they have had some fantastic players and are still one of my favourite teams to watch.

Kilkenny are better at hurling - Deserved!
Clare 5-21 Kilkenny 0-04

I really dont care what tag Derry get as long as they play this kind of football and win a few games when it matters.

Better than a 1 man forward line but it was deserved in the past.Cassidy has experimented big time even making 7 changes from the Kerry game.Players who wouldn't normally have been given a chance are getting a go.There is a bit of strength in the panel now which was missing before. It's league,it's early days so I won't be getting excited but it's a new refreshing no nonsense approach this year which should see Derry giving the championship a right good rattle.

Correct about Down. Excellent forwards, no defence to speak of. If that continues, never going to make any headway in Ulster

I think these "tags" are simply a case of lazy analysis. People who like to think they know what theyre talking about use them to turn proper debate into uneducated slagging matches.

Niamh

i remember the first game in the championship for Armagh last year against Cavan. Armagh had 10 different scorers, wasnt long before it was back relying on McDonnell and Clarke. Wouldnt read too much into it just yet. I remember giving you similar advice to a similar post you made this time last year. I love your optimism but dont get too carried away just yet.
