Gerry Reilly FT

June 16, 2007
The 19th anniversary of the Gerry Reilly Memorial U-16 Inter-County Football Tournament gets underway this year on Saturday, 24 June - with defending champions Dublin taking on Kildare. This is Kildare's first time to take part in the tournament and they are expected to put in a very strong challenge for outright glory. On Sunday, 24 June Meath play Westmeath, which is always a keenly fought game between the 2 teams who share the best record in the tournament. The competition has proved a great success in providing a platform to launch inter-county football careers. The tournament is run on a 'round robin' basis, each team plays each other. 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and the two top teams play in the final. This tournament commemorates Gerry Reilly who was killed tragically in December '87 at 16 years of age, and he had already proved to be a great footballer with huge potential to go on to great heights in the game.
