U16: Mellifont draw with St Mary's

April 14, 2013
Mellifont Rovers: 2-10
St Marys: 3-7

These two sides served up an enthralling content in this U16 Div 1 League clash in Collon on Thursday evening last.

Mellifont, fresh from their winning Leinster campaign, dominated the first quarter of this match with Craig Corrigan getting their first point after only one minute of play. Their lead was doubled on five minutes with a point from Tommy Molloy. At the start of the second quarter, the Marys got into the rhythm of the game with 2 points from Lorcan Malone and one from mid-fielder Ryan Rooney. Mellifont's reply was a booming point from Jack Roddy. On the stroke of 20 minutes Marys scrambled in the first of 3 goals when James Conlon was on the mark. This was quickly followed by a goal each from Malone and Luke O'Kane to put the Ardee side eight points clear and leave the Mellifont lads shell-shocked. Two minutes before the break, Mellifont power-house, James Carraher drove into Mary's defence to score a fine goal and narrow the gap to five points at half time.

On the resumption Marys extended their lead with points from Stephan Bingham and Ryan Rooney. Then Mellifont hit a purple patch with six unanswered points between the tenth and twentieth minute - from James Carraher (4) Ben Watters and Jack Roddy. Rooney then steadied the ship for the Ardee men with a point but slack defending by the Mary's rearguard allowed Jason McKeown to steer the ball into the corner of the Ardee net and leave the home side a point ahead.

For the final few hectic minutes both sides had good chances but Mary's Lorcan Malone got the vital score to leave the teams level at full time. On the balance of play this was probably a fair result
