Limerick hurling star Mike Galligan has announced his retirement from the inter-county scene. The Claughaun man, who has featured on Limerick teams over the past 12 years, was at the peak of his career in the mid-1990s when the Shannonsiders dominated Munster but failed to win an All-Ireland title. The county is still haunted by the All-Ireland defeats of 1994 and '96 to Offaly and Wexford respectively. Over the course of his career, Galligan earned a reputation as one of the most skilful and stylish players in the game, operating in attack, either as a half forward or corner forward. "I have had 12 years since 1988. The demands are becoming greater and I'm not getting any younger," he said yesterday. "It's time to let the young fellows in. Nowadays, you are talking of a commitment of four nights a week and every weekend." Galligan believes a bright future beckons for Limerick following this year's capture of the All-Ireland Under 21 Championship. "There are a lot of good young players coming through and the win in the All-Ireland Under 21 Championship should help bring them on. They are able to give the time and commitment that is now required. Cork are even training now. That shows how demanding it is now on teams." Tweet
