The start of the Allianz NHL may have taken up all the headlines last weekend, but then in Connacht a barren spell of 40 years was ended by Leitrim hurlers.
Not known as a hurling stronghold, Leitrim's success with the small ball could be described as being as rare as hens' teeth.
However, last Sunday they defeated Sligo in the Connacht Hurling League which is their first title at provincial level since 1976 when they won the Connacht junior hurling championship, which incidentally was their fourth title at this level, having being crowned champions in 1969, '70 and '75.
These wins go along with the Connacht Minor final win in 1965, which saw Leitrim play Limerick in the All-Ireland MHC semi-final.
A late flourish saw Leitrim defeat Sligo by 1-14 to 1-13 and it sets them up nicely for their opening NHL 3B against the Yeats County on March 13th.
