Celbridge boss delighted with win

Celbridge manager Damien Byrne expressed his delight after his side impressive win over Adamstown to advance to the Leinster club intermediate hurling championship final.

The Kildare champions saw off their Wexford counterparts by 0-17 to 1-7 at St Conleth Park in Newbridge, where outstanding performances from Billy White and Aidan McDonagh helped swing a victory for the hosts.

"It's always good to get into a Leinster final, we're delighted with it," Byrne told the Kildare Nationalist afterwards. "We worked hard and that is the basis of everything really."

He added: "In the first 15, 20 minutes we were making a lot of basic mistakes, not getting the ball up, handpasses going astray, basic stud but that happens when lads are uptight, nervous wanting the thing to go well, so you overlook it let's say but in fairness, they settled down again.

"It was always going to be a tough match because Adamstown have come through Wexford and all the reports have been that very few scores - 9, 10 points off them - we knew we were going to have to score from longer range. The likes of Aidan McDonagh stepped up and scored two points from wing-back in the first half, that's the sort of game it was going to be."

Byrne is now hoping the team can up their performance for the provincial final, which they lost last season to Kilkenny champions Dicksboro by 16 points.

"I think the most important thing is that we perform, the results take care of themselves after that. Our expectation is that we perform to the best of our ability and if that is good enough to win then it's good enough to win it," said the manager.
