Inishowen GAA club notes

May 26, 2009
Buncrana The U10 footballers competed in round 2 of the Northern board blitzes in Newtown on Saturday. Missing a number of regulars due to the First Communion, the boy's performed well in both games, losing to Glenfin and defeating the host club Naomh Colmcille. Thanks to Newtown for hosting and providing refreshments for players and supporters. The dual players in this squad had a busy weekend with a hurling blitz in Carndonagh on Sunday. Wins were recorded against St Eunan's, Burt, Muff and Carn, with some fine skills on show. The depth of talent in this side is there for all to see. The U12 footballers continued their recent better form and recorded their first win of this campaign with a win against Moville at home. This relatively young squad has improved of late and hope to carry it on for the rest of the season. Thanks to all who took part in the sponsored walk on Sunday. A large turn out of players and family was great to see. Anyone with sponsor cards is asked to return them as soon as possible. Sunday evening was then rounded of in the Drift Inn with Daltach - Michael Gallinagh, Tom Byrne, Matt McGranaghan and Michael Carey providing the entertainment a great night was had by all. Burt Burt hosted Naomh Columba in the quarter-final first leg of the Intermediate Championship on Saturday night, but lost out in both the reserve and senior games. The Reserves didn't make use of the stiff breeze in the first half and while they were still in touch at half time, they struggled in the second period and lost by 0-13 to 0-5. The senior team will be disappointed to have lost by 1-10 to 1-8. Despite being reduced to 14 men in the first half, they had enough chances to win the game but hitting 11 wides to Naomh Columba's four tells its own tale. However, both teams can travel to Glencolmcille in a month's time knowing that they are more than capable of getting the win that will send their respective ties to a play-off. The footballers play Cloughaneely in the All County League on Bank Holiday Monday. The farmyard on the Grianán Estate will become a home away from home for club members this week as the final touches are made before the start of the Sheep Shearing All-Ireland on Friday night. Liam McKinney will be in touch regarding work rotas. Last Thursday evening saw a small bit of history made when Burt fielded a first ever girl's team in competitive football. The U14s travelled to Clonmany to play Urris and won 6-3 to 3-4. It was an excellent performance against good, experienced Urris team. Their next match is at home to Carn at 6pm on Thursday night. The U12 blue and gold football teams continued their fine run with victories over Urris last Tuesday evening. The Blue team put in a much better performance than they managed against Carn and won comfortably. The Gold team too did well to win their game but had too battle for most of the game to guarantee a result. Tonight, Tuesday 26 May, the U12 teams are away to Muff. For updates on club under-age activities, log onto www.twitter.com/dowdsie The U14 footballers got their Inishowen league campaign off to a bad start with a 4-13 to 1-3 defeat at home to Urris on Friday night. Injuries hampered the team, but Urris were much sharper and stronger on the night. Next up for Burt is an away fixture to Muff on Friday night. Under-age football training on Saturday next, 30 May, will be cancelled - everyone will be busy with All-Ireland Sheep Shearing Championships. The U14 hurlers had a lucky escape on Wednesday night when they came from behind to beat Carndonagh. Burt trailed for most of the match and were finding it difficult to plant passes into their forwards. However a couple of late goals were enough to secure victory. The hurling Community Games final was played in Burt on Thursday night with the U11 hurlers facing Letterkenny Gaels. Very much under strength, Burt were overwhelmed by the speed and movement of their opposition. The Gaels led by two points at half time but a few early goals in the second period finished off any chance of Burt staging a comeback. Final score Burt 2-1, Letterkenny Gaels 5-2. Many thanks to all the parents who came out in support and to the Gaels management that supplied medals for both teams for the final. There was no winner of the lotto jackpot last week. Nuala Gallagher, Bridgend and Emma Downey, Burt won 20 each. The numbers drawn were 5, 1, 2, 6, 7, 4, 3. Next week's jackpot is 1,650. Anyone with lotto's should have them in the clubhouse by Thursday night at 8.15 pm or hand it to any club member. Underage hurling training is on every Monday from 6pm to 7.30pm for under-8s up to under-12s and the under-14 camogie team. Everybody must bring 1 for training and everyone is reminded to bring helmets and other equipment. All underage players must arrive at pitch for 5.55pm. The VHI Donegal GAA Cúl camps take place in Burt from Monday 6 July to Friday 10 July. The cost is 65 per child, with each additional family member just 50 and every participant will get a full playing kit. Application forms are available from Bernie Glenn and Manus O'Donnell in the schools, or from Danny. A piece of jewellery was found on the pitch after Saturday night's championship game, but may have been lost at an earlier time. To claim your item contact Danny Dowds. Carn On Saturday evening last both our senior and reserve teams played Bundoran in the first leg of the 1st round of the Championship at home. The results went in favour of the Bundoran club, with our seniors losing by 4-11 to 1-4 and the reserves losing by 2-12 to 2-5. Both teams will feel very disappointed as they played below what they are capable of. Short a number of regular players Carn showed a great fighting spirit throughout this Northern Board game. At half time they well still in contention with only two points separating the sides. However Malin scored two goals early in the second period to take control of the game and they eventually won by 2-13 to 2-5. The minor hurlers completed their league campaign on Thursday last when they played St Eunan's. With the club fielding a minor team for the first time this year it is important that we build on this in the coming years. The U16 league begins in July and management will be in contact with players to arrange training as soon as possible. Carn U14s travelled to Burt and played their game of the season. With three minutes remaining in the game the visitors lead by two points. An injury to Jamie McLaughlin resulted in Burt getting a vital score and from the puck out had the sliotar in the back of the net to leave the final score Burt 3-8 Carn 3-4. On this occasion Fergal Bradley, Conor McCormick, Liam Fox, Conor Doherty (S) and Caoimhín Fogarty played exceptionally well and showed great leadership. They will now play Mac Cumhaill's in the championship. On Sunday in Páirc Uí Dhochartaigh a U10 hurling blitz took place with St Eunan's, Burt, Buncrana and Muff travelling to Carndonagh. Seventy children took part on the day in what was a nine a-side competition playing 15 games in all. Many thanks to all the clubs who travelled, especially Muff, and to the three Young Whistlers who took charge on the day. The next U10 hurling blitz will be on 28 June. The U16 footballers lost by 3-4 to 1-6 to Malin in the Northern Board U16 Division 2 plate final. The U14 footballers got their season under way on Friday with a one point victory over Naomh Pádraig. The team were guilty of making basic errors but showed a fighting spirit to win the game against a fast moving Muff side. Training will continue on Wednesday at 7pm. The team have a bye in the league this Friday with the next match being at home to Moville on 5 June. Carn recorded a good 7-3 to 4-2 victory over Naomh Pádraig in the U12 championship in difficult conditions last Tuesday night. See match report on page 59. The U16 Girls made the short trip to Moville on Tuesday evening last to take on the home side. Excellent performances from Chloe, Denise, Rebecca, Lauren and Stephanie Diver were not enough to prevent a fairly easy victory for Moville. Training continues on Tuesday evenings at 6 pm and on Saturday mornings at 11 am. The team was: Chloe McLaughlin, Amy Norris, Denise McLaughlin, Stephanie Molyneaux, Stephanie Diver, Lauren Todd, Louise McLaughlin, Enya Gibbons, Natasha Gallagher, Rebecca Gibbons, Leanna McLaughlin, Kirsty Canny, Rachael McLaughlin, Cliodhna Canny and Shareen Doherty. The winning numbers in the club mini-lotto were 11, 5, 15, 24 and 16. There was no jackpot winner. The 75 went to Anne Doherty (Owen), 47 Convent Road, 30 to Mary McConalogue, Gleneely; 15 to Barry Doherty, Gortfad, Clonmany; Rose Davenport, Foden, Carndonagh; and Dolores O'Donnell, Ballybeg, Carndonagh. The jackpot pot next week is 4,500 and the draw will be held in the Glen Bar. Moville The annual golf classic will take place on Saturday 20 June. The format is a team of four, any combination. A draw will also take place in conjunction with the classic. We would ask for as much support as possible for this fundraising venture to help overcome the cost of travelling throughout the large county of Donegal and to maintain our development plans. The senior and reserve teams travelled to Letterkenny on Saturday evening and both recorded big victories. First half goals from Eunan Hegarty, Conor O'Donnell, John Faulkner and Sean O'Hare paved the way for the seniors as they went on to win by 4-11 to1-4. Paddy Keys, Owen Logue and Niall Cavanagh starred as the reserve team had an impressive victory on a scoreline of 2-14 to 1-6. The U14s went down to Buncrana on Friday evening. Peter Burke, Ciaran Moore and Sean McClenaghan were best for Moville. On Friday the U14s are at home to Urris, players should be at the pitch at 6.30pm. Training takes place in Carrick on Wednesday evening. The senior ladies recorded another big victory with an away win against Mac Cumhaill's. Anita Doherty, Gemma Faulkner and the two Niamhs, Hegarty and McLaughlin, were best. Next Sunday the ladies are at home to Glenfin in the league. This is also a dress rehearsal for the championship as both teams will also clash in Moville. The match on Sunday has 12 noon throw in. Good luck to Chermaine McDermott, Blannad McLaughlin and Shannon and Sarah Jane McDonald and the Donegal girls U14 team when they take on Monaghan in the Ulster final. With the minors and U16s already crowned Ulster Champs the U14s will be out to make it a hat trick. Girls underage training for all age groups takes place every Monday at 6pm. U10 training for boys and girls continues every Saturday at 10am. All welcome. Naomh Colmcille Convoy knocked our Senior team out of this year's Championship at home on Sunday evening last in the second leg of the preliminary round. After leading by four at half time and good value for that lead all players were very disappointed not to see out the second half. For full match report see our website www.naomhcolmcille.donegal.gaa.ie With just the League now to play for it is very important for all players to continue putting in the same effort that has been shown so far this season. Next senior game will be against Red Hugh's next weekend. Training continues every Tuesday and Thursday at 8pm sharp. All new players very welcome. Under 10 and U12 training continues on Saturday at 10.30-12.00 noon. Thanks to all the travelling teams to our under age blitz last weekend at home and to every one who helped out in any way. This week the U-2s play away to Naomh Pádraig, Lifford at 7. Meeting at the clubhouse at 5.30pm. U14 training is on this Thursday at 6.45 sharp all players to be a club for 6.30. Also the U14s will play Steelstown in a challenge match on Saturday morning next at home, players to be at the clubhouse at 12. _The minors, missing 2 or 3 players, put in a fantastic performance against Robert Emmett's last Monday night at home, an excellent team performance by all. The club would like wish to Matthew Crossan all the best with his new venture Mango Take Away, Killea. Congratulations to all the the 150 Club winners this month, 1st prize of 300 to Vinnie & Eileen McGrath; 200 Sean McDaid; 100 Mark McDaid. Tiarnan Callaghan won 75 in this weeks club lotto. Forms are currently available from any team manager or committee members to avail of a new standing order system so you can do the Lotto on a weekly basis. This is a very important way of keeping the club running and continuing to develop our facilities. Could all forms please be returned to committee members to get the standing order set up. For up to date club news and match photos, visit our website at_www.naomhcolmcille.donegal.gaa.ie Naomh Pádraig The numbers drawn in last weeks lotto draw were 2, 4, 7, 6, 5, 1 and 3. Congratulations to Mary Curran of Muff who predicted the correct sequence and scooped the jackpot of 350. The seniors continued their winning streak with a hard fought away victory against Milford on Saturday evening. Played in perfect conditions, the first half turned out to be a closely fought affair as a Gerard McColgan penalty ensured the teams went in even at 0-5 to 1-2 at half time. The home side started the second half very strongly and raced into a 5 point lead however the visitors didn't give up and 2 excellent long range points by Martin Duffy got Naomh Pádraig back into the game which was followed by a Raymond McLaughlin fisted goal which put Naomh Pádraig back in front. Milford responded with two quick points to leave the scoreboard level again however an Oisin McColgan goal all but ensured victory for the visitors and a late free kick from Gerard McColgan left the final scoreline at Milford 0-13 Naomh Pádraig 3-8. Training continues on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7.30pm. The U14's Inishowen campaign continued on Friday evening when they narrowly lost to Carndonagh by two points. Naomh Pádraig got off to a slow start and were three points down at half time. The second half produced a better display however inaccuracy in front of the posts meant Carn held on for victory. The date for the club's upcoming Table Quiz has now changed to Saturday 13 June in Foody's Lodge at 10pm. All proceeds go towards the purchase of an underage Hurling and Football rig. The clubs annual Sports Day is also fast approaching. A fun filled day of events takes place of Sunday 21 June. Keep an eye on the club notes in the coming weeks for further details. The U12s are in action on Tuesday evening when they host Burt. The games throw in at 6.15pm and 7pm respectively. The U14 season also continues on Friday 29 May with a home game also against Burt. Throw in is at 7pm. Meanwhile U10 training continues on Friday evenings at 6.30pm at Ture and all welcome. Finally, keep up to date online via the website - www.naomhpadraig.com. Urris The two league points didn't come easily at Straid last Saturday evening with the Senior team being made to battle hard to the very end of their match, to secure a just deserved 0-11 to 0-8 victory. The two points earned from the game has moved us into third place in the League and next weekend's visit to Carndonagh could prove a big one as far as our overall season goes. The seniors were the only team in action last weekend with Naomh Bríd being unable to field a Reserve team. Both the seniors and Reserves are away to Carndonagh in the League this coming Saturday with the Reserve game throwing in at 6pm and the senior game at 7.30pm. The lads should check at training with John or Paddy for fixture times and days. The Minors and U16s will be contacted about training and there may be friendly matches arranged in the meantime to keep the boys sharp before the resumption of their competitions after the exams. The U12 boys are away to Moville on Tuesday evening in a re-scheduled match, not off as was published in the bulletin. The bus will be leaving from Straid at 5.15pm sharp. Victory is needed to end the recent poor run of form that the team has been on. The boys and girls should check with Patrick or Colm if they are unsure about arrangements. Training will continue at the normal time on Thursday evening from 5-6.15pm. The U14 boys got their season off to a very positive start when they beat Burt by a large margin in the first match of the Inishowen league. This was a measure of revenge for the lads who lost out to the same team in the County Final last year. This week they will be on the road again on Friday evening, when they travel to Moville. The bus will leave from Straid at 6pm and will leave the Isle Road 10 minutes prior to that. The lads will now train on Wednesday evenings from 6.15-7.30pm; Paul will confirm travel arrangements at training. The U16 girls have no game this week to allow them time to prepare for their exams. The U14 girls played Burt last week and were unlucky to loose on the night. If the girls had been a little more clinical they would surely have won the game which they dominated for long periods of the second half. The team will be training from 5-6pm on Wednesday evening. The girls should check with Paul at training for fixtures. The U12s play Moville on Monday evening and details of their next game away to Carndonagh will be given to them then. The girls have won all of their league games so far and if they can keep the momentum up they will progress to the knockout stages of the competition. The U10s will be training in Straid on Saturday mornings from 10-11.30am. Their season will begin very shortly and friendlies are being arranged over the next couple of weeks so the boys and girls need to make the effort to get to training. David will let the team know if and when there are matches arranged. The Match and Win years last week were 1968, 1976, 1977 and 1982, there was no Jackpot winner and this has now risen to 1140. The 15 consolation prizes were won by: Detta Molloy, c/o Hession's, Roxtown; Sean Long, 1 Swilly View, Inch Island; Ryan Doherty, (R), Urrismana; Neil Grant, Gortfad; Patricia McElhinney, Gleneely.
