Rogan takes up Derry role

January 19, 2011
Former Antrim hurler and selector Ger Rogan has been appointed as the new manager of the Derry senior and U21 hurling teams.

Rogan was part of a side regarded as the best ever to represent Antrim, playing alongside such greats as Sambo McNaughton, Ciaran Barr and Olcan McFetridge, although he missed the 1989 All-Ireland final against Tipperary.

He has been part of the Saffrons' management team under Dinny Cahill in recent years and was interested in taking over the position on his own steam back in 2005 but was passed over in favour of Jim McKernan.

Derry County Board chairman John Keenan said, "Ger has a fine record in management and having worked with a number of clubs here in Derry, he is very familiar with the hurling scene in our county."

Paying tribute to outgoing boss James O'Kane, Keenan added, "I would like to thank James and his backroom team for the massive effort that they have put into working for the betterment of Derry hurling during their tenure.

"James' commitment to the development of hurling in our county is second to none and the Derry County Board wish him all the best for future."
