We are a joke

(Oldest Posts First)

Tom Smith bemoaned the fact we had no motorway which brought down howls of derision upon him and to our County in General.

Why is this?

We either roll over when someone has a go about our alleged meanness or join in in the sneering.
This general lack of pride manifests itself in the appealing record we now have in football terms.
Our young players don't have these hang ups but still have to listen to the monotonous MCB jokes. I actually saw book shops in this county selling Cavan man jokes the book was subsidised by the arts council!

If the arts council sponsored a book mocking any other body of people there would be outrage. Taking a group of people and applying a stereotype to them is generally outlawed through out the world but not when it comes to applying a tag of meanness to your mother your father your brother, sister son and daughter and you, in this country. The lie over brigade will hide behind the " you have no sense of humour" argument rather than confront the slur.
Be proud of our County Tom's observation regarding the motorway is valid, we don't get Factories we don't have jobs announcements we don't get respect.

We should start by respecting ourselves!

Ochonaris,

I fully agree with you that since Cavan football started on its downward slope that we are the laughing stock of Ireland.
we need to climb to the top in Ulster and fly the Blue colour with pride again

This thread is a joke.

The meanness jibes are all in good faith, if you can't take a joke that's your own problem.

However, there may be a valid point as regards the lack of infrastructure/development in Cavan. The 3 free state Ulster counties were always forgotten about by the Dublin government and southern media.

Nobody likes us, but we don't mind. Personally I like this "us against the world" mentality that Cavan/Monaghan/Donegal share.

An Cabhán abú.

I'm not sure it's the poor record that has made us the joke but it certainly has coincided. I just feel as a county we shouldn't allow people to feel its ok to be rude to you when you say where you are from. It's not a sense of humour thing but a crassness that should be confronted. If you acted the same to a newcomer to this country you would, quite rightly, be castigated.

Reasons to be cheerful:

You have a world champion handballer
You don't need to worry about hurling
You have more pigs than any other county
You hosted the best Fleadh ceoil ever (x2)
You will never run out of bream/pike/perch
The M3 motorway means you now only have to spend 25 minutes in Meath every time you go to Dublin
Neven cooks the best dinner in the country
You have a competitive senior football championship again
You export unwanted county players
Your USFC record will never be overhauled
You are surrounded by less succesful counties than your own (schadenfraude)
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to live country music
Sillan fries is the best chipper in christdendom
You have a pumpkin festival

need i go on....

What's funny 70 mins

A Cavan man,Tom Smith, wrote to HS re the lack of investment in Cavan. This brought howls of derision, my point is that it's regular to be confronted with derision when you say you are from Cavan. People think its OK to immediately trot out a Cavan man meanness joke. It's basically rude and we just let it slide. Or in your case 70 you join in the sneering and feel ashamed if its confronted.
When was the last time a factory or business was placed here by the IDA or the Goverent, when was the last time there was a jobs announcement in this County. I suppose you think that is funny or does this make you ashamed as well?

Ochonaris

I fully agree with you that 70 minus is the type of person who would sneer at Cavan people for standing up for themselves.
As a person who has Cavan Town (Gaels) at heart. Co Cavan football is my passion I like to think that I have promoted Cavan in this forum for many years.
I do recall a few years ago stating that the motorway should have come all the way to Cavan Town, my wish for such a motorway was two fold.
No 1 That it would provide ease of passage for players returning to Train in Cavan
No 2 That it would provide a quick getaway for people wanting to depart Cavan GAA in haste.
