Leinster Junior Football Championship

(Oldest Posts First)

I wonder what is the idea of Cavan putting on a round of fixtures for Wednesday May 30th, when Cavan play Wexford on that date in The Leinster Junior Championship?

Are Cavan going to withdraw or have they withdrawn or if not how will Cavan field a team or will the fixtures be called off.

Any body got any idea?

give the other U21 players a chance bring in Dermott Sheridan Micheal Hannon A Gaynor C Galligan M. Brennan c Makey G Peaarson and you will have a nice blend of mature and youth F Reilly in goal

Sheridan Brennan and Mackey featured in the Senior Champinship last year so they couldn't add anything to the team! All They were involved at some point against Donegal.

The point is not the team selected but will a full round of fixtures be going ahead in Cavan that night or will clubs with pkayers on the panel have their matches called off.

Was working near Wexford yesterday so caught the game on the way back. Great location, beautiful countryside.

Apart from the 3rd quarter when Wexford scored their penalty, Cavan were never really in trouble. They started marginally the better team and finished by far the better team. Such a contrast to the Donegal fiasco, no blanket to be seen, football played by willing footballers on both sides.

I can't say any of the Cavan lads played badly at all. They all shone at some stage. We were particularly strong down the middle. Rory Dunne at FB, Joshua Hayes CFB, Declan McKiernan at MF, Martin Reilly at CF and Martin Dunne up front. These lads controlled the game. Fergal Slowey was also in the wars shipping a few hard knocks in the first half. It was Chris Conroy from Lavey who scored our first goal ( not McKiernan as stated on the front page) and the half time score was actually Wex 0 - 7 Cav 1 - 7.

Keith Fannin captained the side and put in a very hard working shift. Mattie Forde moved to CF for the second half but was well marshalled by Hayes. Hayes even got up the field to join the attack on a few occasions, very impressive.

However, the main story for Cavan was the relationship between Martin Dunne and the rest of the forwards. They were all able to find him with clever passing and use him as a target man to get a return pass and break the defensive cover. Dunne was simply superb. He won all his ball, and tortured Wexford scoring 1 - 5 and setting up many more. Martin Reilly was also very impressive with his distribution and overall busy style. A very intelligent footballer.

It was uplifting to see a Cavan team play their football so skilfully, so enthusiastically and so confidently. A million miles from the Ulster championship tense defensive game. OK, Wexford Juniors aren't the Donegal Seniors and the stakes weren't as high as the Ulster Senior Championship. But it was a good contest, apart from the last 10 mins when the towel came in from the South East, and Cavan won it decisively. On this evidence, Dunne (R), Hayes, Reilly and Dunne (M) should all figure in the qualifiers.

Thanks Ontheforty. Good report. Good to see we can still compete at most levels of inter-county football despite what Martin McHugh thinks. Indeed there could be a few who will step up, and maybe give us all a bit of cheer this Summer. From what you say Rory Dunne, Joshua Hayes, Martin Reilly and Martin Dunne were some of the lads who were impressive. A few of these would give a bit of experience to the young lads going forward on the Senior team.
Who would like a crack at our beloved Cill Dara in a Leinster final?? Cherish the thought. And they might even give Seanie a game or would he be legal!!!!! Breffni Abu.
