Nemo singing in the rain
October 24, 2005
The Cork SFC final kept to the script at rain-lashed Pairc Ui Chaoimh as raging hot favourites Nemo Rangers eased their way to a 1-14 to 0-7 victory over Muskerry.
The winners-elect laid the foundation for their comfortable victory by firing over five unanswered points during the second quarter to help themselves to a 0-8 to 0-3 interval lead.
The mid-Cork divisional side tried their damndest to knock Nemo off their stride early on with points from Gary O'Halloran, DD Dorgan and Cathal Sheehan all finding the target in the first quarter.
However that was really as good as it got for the underdogs as Nemo came roaring back with an Alan Cronin point putting them 0-4 to 0-3 in front by the 15th minute.
Powered forward by Martin Cronin from midfield and man of the match James Masters up front, Nemo switched Alan Cronin to full-forward and Rangers never looked back.
After a Cathal Sheehan point cut Nemo's lead to 0-10 to 0-5, Alan Cronin created the openings for both James Masters and Sean O'Brien to put the green and blacks on easy street.
And the issue was well and truly done and dusted when Cronin combined with Sean O'Brien to put William Masters through for the game's only goal.
The remainder of the game was nothing more than a cakewalk for Rangers who took the opportunity to introduce their full complement of substitutes, one of whom, Colin Corkery, received arguably the biggest cheer of the day.
Nemo's victory marked their first SFC title after a two year gap.
