Cork dual legend Ray Cummins says the advances made in sport science should help accommodate players who want to combine gaelic football and hurling.

The dual star is an endangered species in the GAA and Eoin Cadogan's decision to throw his lot in with the Rebel County footballers has refocused the spotlight on the issue.

In his playing days, Cummins won four All-Ireland SHC medals and one football.

"I'm of a different generation and I fully appreciate that the levels of fitness today are way ahead of what we had," he told The Irish Daily Star.

"I'm just sorry that it can't be managed better. Guys that have the inclination to play both games should be accommodated.

"I haven't spoken to Eoin Cadogan, but it seems that it's just not possible now."

Cummins continued: "I'd have thought that today, with all the medical support and science that goes into training, that it could be managed better.

"I mean, in our time there was no science to it.

"I remember, for example, going on tours to the States with the All Stars or even with Cork playing League matches, and we didn't even know about hydration or dehydration.

"The point I'm making is that I would have thought with all the science and knowledge they have now in terms of fitness and recovery after games, that it could be managed.

"But obviously not."
