Cavan Camogie County Report: Cavan -v- Carlow
In what was near perfect conditions the Cavan Senior Camogie Team travelled to Carlow for the first round of the Irish Daily Star National Camogie League division 4. The pitch at O'Harahan's GAA club in Carlow town was in great condition as referee Gerry McGough from Dublin got the game under way. Carlow started the game well as Ciara Quirke opened the scoring with a great point from a tight angle. She followed this up with another from a free. Emma Brennen then added to the score line with a point before Quirke got her 3rd score of the day. Cavan backs were under a lot of pressure but some fine work from Jenny O'Rourke and Caitriona Leddy in the Cavan back line was beginning to work. Carlow got a 45 and Emma Brennen sent in a high ball that dropped into the top left hand corner for the only goal of the game. This seem to wake Cavan up as Brid Boylan, the Cavan Captain, replied with a point which could very easily have gone in the back of the net. Claire Fitzpatrick of Castletara than took a good pass at mid field and ran with the Sliotar before she scored a point. Ciara Mullins who along with her midfield partner, Tara Wilson, had an outstanding game got her only score of the match. After receiving a long puck out from Katie Smith the Cavan goalie, Tina Reilly and Brid Boylan showed some great team work that ended in Brid getting a point. As the game continued Carlow added 4 more points, 2 of which came from frees. Sinead McKenna who worked hard all day got Cavan's last score of the half, which gave a half time score line 1.09 to 0.04.
Cavan started the second half with much more fight in them. All over the field the Cavan players tried their best but Carlow seem to get their scores easier. Susan Williams was the first to score followed by Mary Coady. At the other end Claire Fitzpatrick put a free over the bar. The Cavan forwards were working hard but they had to as the Carlow backs were very strong. Sinead McKenna tapped another free over and this would be Cavan's last score. While Carlow got 3 more points. The final score was 1.14 to 0.06. The small contingent of Cavan supporters that made the long trip to Carlow would feel that Cavan were better than the score line would suggest. There are a young team who will have learned a lot from this game.
The goalie Katie Smith (Laragh) show promise as this was her first game in between the up rights. The backs Sinead Moore(Castletara), Jenny O'Rourke(Laragh), Erica Joyce(Crosserlough), Nicole Collins(Laragh), Catriona Leddy(Lacken) and Aileen Smith(Castletara) all had to work so hard and their didn't disappoint. Tina Reilly(Laragh) and Rosie Crowe (Lacken) had their hands full at mid field and worked very hard. The Forwards Sinead McKenna(Crosserlough), Shannon Gill(Crosserlough), Claire Fitzpatrick(Castletara), Brid Boylan(Castletara), Roisin O'Keefe(Lacken) and Grainne Power(Laragh) never gave up even when it didn't go their way. The subs Mairead McCabe(Castletara), Aoife McDermott(Crosserlough) and Emma Denning(Laragh) all may an impact on the game when brought on.
Cavan now play Kildare on the 16thof March at home and your support would be very much welcomed.
PROFILE OF LARAGH CAMOGIE CLUB
The Parish of Laragh have a long and proud history with Camogie. As far back as the 1930's there was a team in Laragh, in fact there was two clubs in the Parish, the clubs of Laragh and Stradone. Stradone had success in 1948, 1949 and 1950. Stradone beat Laragh in the 1950 final replay. But Laragh got its just reward and won the championship in 1951. Camogie had a few lean years but was revived in the 60's when we took home the Sheelin cup however it faded away again due to emigration. In 1979 Bridie Smith, Rose McKenna and Bridgid Brady got the club together again and so the present day Laragh Camogie Club was formed. The club had great success in the 80's with junior, intermediate and senior league and championship victories. While the senior club was winning our underage club was keeping up with them winning primary schools and minor titles. In 1990 Laragh make camogie history in Cavan by becoming the first club to contest the Ulster senior club final. And so on a fine September day in Breffni park Laragh took on Swatragh of Derry. In what prove to be a great game Swatragh was to be the victors. The club continued to try hard and won junior b titles. In 1998 the senior team was re-graded to intermediate and so for the first time since 1984 Laragh didn't field a senior team. Unfortunately both this team and the novice team suffered very heavy defeats during the year. However the primary school team were runners up in the Cumann Na Bunscoil league, Primary school's and mini 7's Cumann Na Bunscoil winner. By 2000 Laragh were playing junior camogie, and this proved to be good for the club. Bailieboro beat us in the league final but on a sunny day in Kilnaleck we beat Bailieboro in the Championship final. By 2001 our underage players were playing indoor camogie which proved to be very popular as the ball moved so easy. We entered both senior and junior teams in 2003 and had not a bad year. We reached both the league finals but lost both to a strong Castletara club. In 2004 we hosted our own tournament 'The Nancy O'Rourke Memorial Tournament'. Nancy was one of the greatest camogie players this country has ever seen and was a very big part of our club. All the while our underage club have been training hard and under the eyes of Marie Collins have had great success. In 2007 Laragh N.S. won the Cumann Na Bunscoil final, our U9's and U13's won their indoor competitions, our U14's and U16's won their competitions. Having won the junior league in 2008 Laragh decided to move up to senior in 2009. We reached the senior B league to be narrowly beaten by Castletara. Again our U14's and U16's won titles this year. Having won junior league in 2010 we lost the championship final to a strong Ballinagh side. 2011 we reach both the league and championship final but lost both. As always the underage club were going well with victories in the U13 division 1 final, the U14 Division1 final and the U16 Division 1 final and later on that year won the Division 1 Cumann Na BunnScoil final. In 2012 all the hard work over the years paid off when Laragh Camogie Club won Division 1 in all competitions that is primary school, Cumann Na Bunscoil, U14, U16, U18, Junior league and championship. Also Division 6 of the primary school competition. So we look forward to 2013 with the senior league and championship on the horizon.
