Carey calls for Croker opening
December 29, 2003
Kilkenny hurling ace DJ Carey says the GAA should look to its own resources to help erase the massive 100 million debt which the development of Croke Park will generate.
Carey maintains the best way of easing the financial burden on the Association is to open up Croke Park to other sports, thus increasing the GAA's stream of income.
"We are being told that the GAA is under pressure to pay for Croke Park - so why not solve the problem by renting it out?
"The GAA is a wealthy organisation so I don't see why county boards have to come under such financial strain.
"If I had a 10,000 sq ft warehouse and only used it a few times a year and left it empty for the rest, I would have to make it viable by renting it out," Carey opined in his weekly newspaper column.
