Walsh Shield: Doyle double sinks Westmeath

January 29, 2011

Carlow's Mark Brennan gives chase to Westmeath's Dermot McNicholas during the Walsh Cup shield match at St Lomans Mullingar.
A first half brace of goals from Craig Doyle helped Carlow to victory over Westmeath in last night's Walsh Shield senior hurling match at Mullingar's Lakepoint Park.

Carlow 2-13
Westmeath 0-16

The centre forward's double gave the visitors a 2-6 to 0-9 lead at the interval, and they maintained their advantage in the second half, despite the dismissal of midfielder Jack Kavanagh early in the half.

Westmeath, who welcomed back dual star Brendan Murtagh from football duty, had ample chances to win the game, but were kept at bay by some excellent goalkeeping by Kevin Keogh.
