Eyes on the ball from Nicola Morrissey
Waterford win Semi-final match against Cork

On Sunday 26th May the Waterford Intermediate camogie team played Cork in Tallow, County Waterford in the semi-final of the Munster Intermediate Championship. Throw-in was scheduled for 1pm on the Sunday afternoon on a sunny but blustery day. A minutes silence was observed before the match for Father Cooney who was a former Chairman and President.

Waterford elected to play with the wind in the first half. Once the sliotar was thrown in by Tipperary referee Ger Browne, advantage immediately went to a very capable Cork team but was aided by some uncharacteristic errors by the Waterford backs, so much so that as early as the second minute Cork were gifted a goal. This was not the start that Waterford had planned. Cork continued to pressure Waterford and scored two points before Waterford had their first score from a Trish Jackman free from the 45 meter line. This score seem to settle the Waterford team scored their second point shortly after by Jenny McCarthy and another point shortly thereafter by Lorraine Bray, both from play.

Waterford's first goal was scored when Lorraine Bray gathered the sliotar on the right wing and made one of many runs towards the Cork goal where she passed to Karen Kelly who slotted the sliotar between the uprights for her first score of the afternoon.

The remaining portion of the first half was controlled well by the Waterford team only allowing Cork two further scores but the swirling wind was proving challenging for Waterford's goalkeeper when Cork did manage to penetrate the Waterford defence. Emma Hannon and Fiona Morrissey were now working well as a partnership in front on the goal winning some important possession for Waterford to build on. The first half ended with further scores from Nicola Morrissey and Karen Kelly. At half time, the score stood at Waterford 1-07 to Cork's 1-04.

A strong start to the second half saw Nicola Morrissey score a point from play which was quickly followed by a goal from Zoe O'Donoghue after some excellent play by Lorraine Bray on the wing. Points followed from Karen Kelly, Nicola Morrissey and Lorraine Bray before Waterford scored their third goal when a surging run by Nicola Morrissey was met by Lorraine Bray. Cork had responded with four points during this period, three of which were from frees.

Midway through the second half the score stood at Waterford 3-12 to Cork's 1-08 and Waterford were well in control. Waterford's fourth goal was scored fittingly by Nicola Morrissey when she accelerated past the Cork defence and fired low from a very tight angle from the right of the Cork goal. Karen Kelly scored the final Waterford score of the afternoon after a couple of scores from Cork. The final score was Waterford 4-14 to Cork's 1-11.

Waterford are now through to the Munster final which is to be played at a date yet to be decided.
