August 19, 2008
Jury's Inn Senior Football League - 17/8/08
Erin Go Bragh 2.12
Four Masters 0.05
Four Masters travelled to Erdington in Birmingham looking to continue their good run in this yearís Warwickshire League in a must-win game to keep their league title challenge alive. Little did they know that Erin Go Bragh were not forthcoming! The first half was nip and tuck with both teams missing some easy scoring point chances while converting others that they got. Danny Doherty (Doc) scoring the majority for Four Masters. There wasnít much between the teams until a fortunate shot by an EGB forward hit the post and rebounded to one of their forwards who neatly dispatched the ball into the net passed the helpless Four Masters keeper Brendan Tiernan. The short whistle soon sounded after this with Erin Go Bragh leading by 5 points.
Half-time score Erin Go Bragh 1-07 Four Masters 0-05.
Erin Go Bragh began the second half in startling fashion scoring four points without reply. Four Masters were not able to get out of their own half and when they did, they came up against a very resolute Erin Go Bragh backline who marshalled the Four Masters forwards throughout the second half thus keeping them scoreless for the half hour. Some silly mistakes by the Four Masters players such as kick passing the ball 8m instead of hand passing it to their players were costing the team dearly thus losing possession every time they did this. The only player who stood out for Four Masters on the day was right-half-back Sean Langford who kept a tight reign on his opponent and never let his opponent get a foot away from him.
Erin Go Bragh broke up the field with 10 minutes remaining and put the game beyond doubt when they scored their second major after their forwards ran through the Four Masters backline and one of them coolly slotted the ball into the back of the net of which the Masters keeper could do nothing about. The referee blew the final whistle of which looked to have ended the Four Masters title challenge for 2008.
Final Score: Erin Go Bragh 2.12 Four Masters 0.05
After the game the Four Masters players found out that Sean Mac Dermotts failed to field against bottom-of-the-table St Barnabas and so they need to win their remaining two games at home to John Mitchells and Erin Go Bragh to be in with a chance of landing the Warwickshire League title provided other results go their way.
Training again continues on Thursday at St. Finbarrís Fields, Holbrooks @ 7pm. See yaís all then. Horsebox!
