Ó Loane' scoring spree in Cambridge

August 13, 2008
Herts Senior Football League Cambridge Parnells 4.11 Glen Rovers 2.05 Missing some established players, Rovers journeyed to Coldhams Common on Sunday and paid the penalty when defeated by the holders in the League. Opponents again in two weeks time in an eagerly awaited championship semi-final clash, this league game was entertaining all through. Not quite New York Giants versus Miami Dolphins and without the razzamatazz of Cheerleaders, American Football on an adjacent pitch provided a unique backdrop to this league game. A highlight was Darren Ó Loane's contribution of 3.05 to Parnells' victory. Ó Loane's reading of play is second to none. No sprinter, he plays deep and has the ability to lose his marker when the final pass is coming his way. Invariably, his finishing is clinical and the scores usually give huge boost to his side. Enormously influential too were no. 11 Pádraigh Finn and midfielder, Conor Ó Carroll who played starring roles all through. Glen Rovers had the strong wind to their backs in the opening half. Failing to use it to their advantage they trailed at the interval 2.04 to 1.03. The opening score fell to Cambridge. It came after midfielder, Martin Coleman's shot came off the upright and Chris Heneghan was on hand to punch over. Rovers' goalkeeper, Jordan Toomey brilliantly saved a John Ennis shot in the 5th minute. It started a passing movement that culminated in a fine point by Dominick Ó Reilly point at the opposite end for the Watford side. From the kick-out that Parnells worked the ball down field allowing Ó Loane to score the first of his three goals. Adept at scoring was Gary Connolly for Glen Rovers. who scored 2.03. The closing minutes of the opening half saw Glen Rovers' Lewis Toomey receive an injury that required medical attention. Hospital treatment was not required and le cúnamh Dé he is in full spirits again. At half time, réiteóir, Damien Moloney (St Dympnas) felt unable to continue and his club colleague, Gerry Naughton stepped in to take over the whistle. Both are to be complimented for performing a sometimes thankless role and doing it well. The 2nd half began with Ó Loane pointing. Then Finn judged the wind direction well to point a free from an acute angle. Craig Byrne came on for Parnells in the second half and caused problems for the Rovers' defence and scored two fine points. Paul Behan, Neilius McCarthy, Jody Daly defended well for the visitors. One movement between Daly and Behan came to Connolly who soloed 60 metres before finding the inside of the side netting with his deft kick. Still, Parnells had too many cannons on the day for the depleted visitors. The two points went to Parnells but with their championship semi-final clash in two weeks, neither side will read too much into the result.
