BBC won't broadcast quarter-finals
August 07, 2008
BBC Northern Ireland has stated that it won't be broadcasting the upcoming All-Ireland SFC quarter-finals involving both Armagh and Tyrone.
Viewers in the Ulster province were able to tune into eight live games in this summer's Ulster SFC on BBC after RTE had agreed to let the northern broadcast air the games simultaneously.
However the agreement between the two broadcasters has expired since the Ulster Championship had finished for the summer, which means that it's also possible that the semi-finals of the Championship will not be shown with the winners of Armagh v Wexford and Tyrone v Dublin set to meet each other in the last four.
"It's a regret that coverage of the quarter-finals will not be available to everyone, particularly to those from Armagh and Tyrone," said Ulster Council Secretary Danny Murphy speaking to the Irish News newspaper.
Murphy expressed disappointment that GAA fans in the province who have no access to RTE will not be able to see the quarter-finals, and stated: "It's clear that there is an audience for our games out there."
A spokesperson for BBC Northern Ireland claimed: "Our TV agreement this year covered games in the Ulster Championship."
RTE's Head of Sport, Glen Killane said: "We went to great lengths to ensure that the Ulster Championship was universally available throughout the island of Ireland. We achieved that by working in co-operation with our colleagues in the BBC.
"The Ulster Championship was a separate deal and both sides were very happy with the arrangement.
"But the quarter-finals are a separate issue and we haven't been able to reach a deal on the latter stages of the All-Ireland."
