McCann calls for retention of Murphy Cup

Antrim's Michael McCann
Antrim midfielder Michael McCann has pleaded with the GAA not to proceed with plans to abolish the Tommy Murphy Cup.
The Saffrons beat Wicklow in last Saturday's final at Croke Park, which will probably be the last game ever to be played in the second tier competition. However, McCann believes it would be a big mistake to end the much-maligned competition just five years since its inception.
"I can why the GAA would want to scrap it because the so-called bigger teams don't want to play in it," he said.
"Even Antrim got a taste of that this year with players not wanting to play in it. But I wouldn't necessarily agree with scrapping it.
"They just need to re-jig it. They could play it off a bit earlier and let the winners get another crack at a qualifying game.
"I wouldn't agree with scrapping it. If they thought about it, and re-jigged it, they could create a worthwhile competition."
